From what I read here, seems like every owner of the R1 has problems with their laptop. Just want to know if there is any one that has their R1 running perfectly no problem before I can jump into conclusion that R1 is absolutely rubbish !!
-
actually I'm pretty happy I don't have any type of sttutering or dpc issues (after applying the dpc fix drivers) the only problem that I've ever had was a deffective dvd drive (it stopped working at day 2 ¬¬) , but yeah it seems that almost everyone is having issues with R1, so I'm happy despite the fact that as soon as it arrived to my house R2 became available and I wasn't in the country at the time so I misssed the return period
-
Life is good with my M17xr1 - once the dpc latency was reduced and fixed issues with the media card reader and wireless adapter.
Then again, I don't regularly over push it by playing crysis (more Football Manager 2010) and overclocking. -
I love my R1, Like everyone else once the DPC drivers + patches were applied it pretty much cleared it all up, I still get the odd one but not very often.
The only gripes i have appear to be with my wireless in general, Occasionally it will drop and i have to turn the wireless off and on again (Quite annoying when in the middle of an online game) and the bluetooth (at least i believe it is the bluetooth) disconnects and reconnects itself, casuing an IMMENSE amount of stuttering for a few seconds in game.
But i shouldn't really complain as i believe its just a driver issue, I'm being lazy and not investigating it. -

Most people are quite happy with their R1's.
You have to remember this is the internet, but it gives a greater voice to the vocal minority than the silent majority. No one with a perfectly working R1 is going to come searching for solutions to problems (and find us at NBR)
So while it seems like the R1 was total rubbish, its only the case looking at it from the peopel complaining about it. -
I'm exceptionally happy with my R1, I was underwhelmed for a while due to the DPC latency issues, but ever since the DPC drivers were released it has been blissful! No interest in upgrading to an R2/3/4 etc. Only upgrade I'd consider in the future is buying 4870s CF. (QX9300 is awesome btw)
-
Good point Kamin, and seems like there are good R1s out there.
-
Mine is rolling quite well. Love it!
-
I never had any issues with my R1. No dpc problems or anything else people talk about. I bought the R2 because of the advantages of a MUCH better looking screen, intel chipset and i7 cpu. The 5870s are nice as well, but not a major upgrade.

I love mine too, wouldnt want to trade for a R2: i like being able to switch off the heavy artillery when not needed too much! And i dont like the new i5 and i7 cores: no undervolt, too much heat, too low frequencies for the price.
The only thing that bothers me are the empty promises: new OSD driver and new chipset drivers... that never came out. Since lots of people got a replacement, the R1 community is more and more silent every day which is a shame
The latency issue never bothered me that much with vista, but isnt acceptable for the price we pay.
And it's not like the R2 hasn't got issues... so all in all: i love my R1 ^^ -
I am not having any really pressing issues with mine now that the DPC is SEMI fixed.
I still wish they would fix some of the other issues regarding this laptop (ie.. touchpad, offical nVidia Drivers with DPC fix, new nVidia Chipset drivers with fix, functioning command center etc..) but overall I am happy.
I use mine every day and dont notice any real problems (ie.. no stuttering anymore, no audio glitches).

No issues here - quite satisfied with my R1.
-
I hated mine the first time I saw the screen, returned right away
-
I'm perfectly happy with mine. The only niggle is the clock modulation throttling which I've fixed with throttlestop so it is no longer an issue for me.
I love the fact I can switch to the integrated gpu when I know I'm not going to be gaming for a while so this will prolong the life of the gpus.
I wish my old m1730 had this function, it would of lasted way longer! -

Add me to the 'happy" list.
Approaching a year and still looks and preforms awesome. -

When I had my R1 it functioned fine after my cards were swapped to ATI. During the whole DPC latency mess, I was the 'capture' that Bill kept referring to as having no issues.
That's how I received my R2... Dell wanted mine back for investigational purposes. That ultimately led to several of the updates which fixed the latency/stuttering issues.
Truth be told, I was shocked when they wanted it... They just called me out of the blue. At first I thought someone was pulling an evil prank until I found out it was indeed legit. -
Happy, too!

Happy here. I got a scratch and dent with the recent discount coupon. It came with the A02 bios and all the bad drivers. Initially I was hopping mad and reboxed the thing. I found this forum and read about 1000 pages of posts. After getting rid of the flakey drivers and updating the bio's I have to say I am quite stoked with the performance. I was torn between the new Asus G73 series and one of these. I got a great deal on my R1 from Dell and so far I am pleased with the decision.
-
I am somewhat happy with the PC. I just think Dell could have managed the DPC issue much better and they could have fixed the issue much better. We still only have a half fix...
-
That's pretty arrogant to assume that no one is enjoying their R1.

I would never buy an R1 again. R2 is really something complete and problem free. Just the touchpad can be better but is not a problem, there is just room for improvement.
-
On the other hand it seems the R2 is amazing though I only kept mine a few days.
I will wait until E3 to re-order. -
I love my M17x R1. Nothing but good times with mine.

I've gotten mine to a place where i can say im satisfied. Uninstalling the Nvidia HD controller fixed my DPC latency issue for the most part and using Throttlestop has eleminated by stuttering problems.
My screen seems fine, it's a little better than the screen i had in my studio 17 which was miles better than the one that was in my 17 inch Inspiron.
That being said, dealing with those problems at first made me angry, but at this point I think i can say that I'm happy. -
I like my m17x, still testing the DPC fixes but it looks better so far.
I only want to upgrade to get
USB 3
RGB LED Screen
FERMI
although depending on what we see for the fermi release may well just go with the ATI offering instead. -
Love my R1 ever since the DPC issue was fixed. I didn't really plan on this becoming a desktop replacement, but that is what it has turned into. I use it everyday.
-
The one and only thing I miss from my R1 was the integrated option. I liked being able to turn off the big guns if I was writing an email or surfing the web. Other than that, I was dissatisfied with the R1 (mine had many problems even after all the fixes) and the R2 is a much nicer machine all around. It isn't perfect, but it is much better than my R1. My $0.02.
-
I thought I was extremely happy with my R1 but my happiness was soon stolen by
DPC Latency issues(seem to have stopped in the last week), unplayable BC2, screen freezes, ODS not working with touch keys, and CPU continually running at 30-50%. Not to mention everything is just slower then it should be.
I have been pretty frustrated lately and not sure what to do!! -
I'm very happy with my new R1, only had the battery not recognized when I first turned it on but after updating bios to A05 it works like a charm and no stutter issues, just a few freezes but not often, its just a matter of finding the right combination of drivers which I'm lazy to change for now.

I personally have always loved my M17x. I feel safe in saying I have probably pushed this machine further than anyone else who has one. It is still a top performing laptop a year after coming out. The chipset works great and is actually better than the R2 because you can properly run in ATA mode if desired and also get full ssd performance, 2 things broken on the R2. The 4870s are great cards and really are just as good as the 5870s - and have many less issues. The screen is not as nice as the rgbled but is not terrible either.
The ONLY problem I have had with my machine is that the CPU is throttled down when you put the laptop under an extreme load. I only run into this when benching though. For games it is fine. I have had the GTX280m sli as well and also liked them, although they definitely use more power than the ATI cards.
Overall I am easily very happy with my R1 and have no interest in the R2 at all.
That was alot to type on my cell phone lol -
-
I love my R1 aswell, even though it does not have top notch cpu and max ram , everything else is maxed out and everything is awesome. Wouldn't want to change it at the moment as the advantages of an R2 (to me at least) are close to none.
-
My favorite day with my r1 was the day I sold it.
-
I love my R1 only real problem I had was my crossfire cable came lose I dont play games but do video edit and watch movies and this i my first Alienware and I am sold will not buy another brand from now on

My system is amazing. Love every piece of it and was very happy until recently.
Out of nowhere this crazy stuttering came up while gaming .... FPS drops to a single digit for 1-3 sec. and goes right up back.
GPUs , MoBo, BiOS, Drivers, AW Sense service disengagement ... just to name a couple of things that have been changed , and noting fixes the problem. Waiting for my tech specialist to call back on my latest message to him that MoBo exchange has not fixed the issue.
All could have been understandable if it would've been nVidia GPU based system ... but I have my setup in ATI Crossfire ... also, CPU has began to show some weird signs of it's random speed drops ... Oh, yeah....Sorry ... I love my R1_ALIEN very much !!! -
I loved my R1. In some ways, even better than my R2 so when I got an R2 refurb after my R1 died I regarded it as a pretty even trade in many ways instead of an upgrade. PhysX support was pretty cool in the few games that supported it, and I had fewer problems with games using NVidia drivers.
When the R2 came out (a whopping 4 months after I bought my R1) I considered attempting to trade up. Since Dell doesn't offer the same upgrade options that Alienware once did as a separate company I would have had to sell my R1 on Ebay and pay the difference on a completely new R2. After doing some research, I found that the performance benefit I would have gotten my moving to a comparable R2 wouldn't have been worth the effort so I stuck with what I had and was very happy.
That being said, the unit -was- solid as a rock until one of the discrete video cards started overheating badly enough that Dell decided to replace the whole laptop.

I just installed two games on my new R2 that ran perfectly well on my R1 and none of them work so yes in some ways the R1 is better.
-
Wow. glad I'm not the only one that loves my R1. I couldn't be happier and bought it from a member of this forum and I think I got a wonderful deal. Dell replaced the blu-ray no questions asked and I have a warranty until November of next year. It's a year old in November. No heat issues etc. I do keep it on a notebook cooler all the time and the previous owner did too. It plays my games without problems and it is a stable over clock at 3.2ghz. Love it.
-
I love my R1. No prob at all
-
I love mine too and even more after I upgraded it with two 285m in SLI
-
I think I'm finally happy with mine after reinstallations, the dreaded latency issues and 1 gpu fan replacement. I just hope now future graphics drivers will play nice so I can actually use the benefits, and if the other gpu fan decides to go it goes before my warrenty runs out lol
But yeah, it's the best laptop I've ever owned and I'm glad I went AW
Is there ANYONE that is happy with their M17x R1 at all ?
