I came across this M17X on a local site. How powerful is it? How does it stack up today in terms of speed and games?

depends on the revision and what customization it has. Some are really good, others.... no so much. ;)

Depending on what revision, it can be upgraded very nicely. R2 can have i7 940xm and 7970m. R3 can have 2940xm and 780m....you get the idea.

It's an R3. I'm guessing upgrades like that would be really expensive. What would be the current gaming power based on his specs? What AAA titles could it play really well as it stands now?

I figure if it needs upgrading immediately, I may as well hold out for something else.

    Thanks so far.

It really depends what the specific components are but any i7 2720QM, 2820QM 2920XM will be sufficient for new AAA games.
In terms of graphics I think the R3 came with a GTX 560m or 580m. A cheap and very good upgrade option would be to a 7970m (you might be able to grab a cheap one in the marketplace).
I'm running my 7970m slightly undervolted and it still runs FC3, Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite and others all on very high or ultra with just a few post processing features turned off in order to get very nice frames per second.

I would ask for the exact components before laying down your cash, particularly if you need to upgrade as well.

Yes, it is very powerful, considering it's a notebook computer. The new Alienware 17 can have a GTX 780M GPU, which is similar to the desktop GTX 680, in terms of in-game performance. That is quite astonishing for a 17" laptop.
