Hi.
I'm going to buy a gaming laptop soon and i was wondering if this is any good
-Intel® Core™ i7 2630QM 2.0GHz (2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
-8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz (4DIMMS)
-320GB
-17.3" Full HD WLED (1080p)
-2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon™ HD 6970M
I'm looking to run all current and most of upcoming games at high/max settings.
(The witcher 2, crysis 2 with directx 11,etc,etc)
P.S. My budget is around $2000
Sorry for my bad english![]()

EDIT:
Ok i made an effort in cash and my computer will be like this:
-Alienware m17x
-Intel® Core™ i7 2630QM 2.0GHz (2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
-4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz (4DIMMS)
-320GB
-17.3" Full HD WLED (1080p)
-2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6990M
Thats all i can afford.
Can i run the witcher 2, crysis 1, crysis 2,etc etc on high/max settings?
P.S. Thanks for all the advice.

id go less ram since its cheaper to install urself but otherwise it should runmost of the games u listed mine can run witcher ok and the only dif between urs and mine is the cpu which doesnt really matter apply game performance as much as ur video card does
-
Get the 2720qm, 4GB RAM and the 6990m.
Why 2720qm you ask? Well higher turbo and price/performance wise the best choice.
Order by phone or chat to get some discount. -
Lol, my alienwares have 260 GTX in SLI, of course that's a good gaming laptop
-
if ur gonna order by phone try to get someone who doesnt have such a heavy accent and is probably from (not to offend anybody or anything) a little sub continent under china and whose real name is probably not paul or george those guys seem like they're reading off a script and will only give u discounts dat u would already get anyways if u ordered online and they try to make it seem lie its something only they can give you by whispering and putting you on hold to talk to their "managers"

It's a good machine. It will run most games maxed.
Crysis I know it cannot run maxed at all. -

^^^ def a good machine Listen to the folks that said get less RAM, the 2720QM, and the 6990M and considering it's brand new with latest tech it won't be outdated for a couple of years.
-
The CPU upgrade is totally not needed, you will see no diference between the 2630 and the 2720 ... none.
But that system will run any games you want atm... -
That is a good gaming laptop, I dont think it can play Witcher 2 on max though. As the others said take i7 2720QM and 6990m instead of 8GB ram.
-
I agree, the 6990m is way the way to go instead of 8GB of RAM. All you need to game is 4GB. It is also much cheaper to upgrade RAM yourself as others have said. If you can afford it, you should also upgrade to the 2720QM.
-
Unless your doing serious image editing or w/e, I doubt you would need the 2720QM. Cost wise is worth it, but the i7s are so ridiculously fast already there wouldn't really be much of an improvement in performance if your just gaming.
-
Bump because of edit

You should def be able to play High, not sure about max settings. Maybe another R3 owner with a 6970 can chime in on that, but if they can or are close to being able to. You probably can as the 6990m is 25% faster than the 6970m.
Congrats man that is a sick rig and you will be happy I am sure. -
If you get 2630qm or 2720qm, 4gb ram, 1080p, and 6970, you can run certainly run Crysis 1 and 2. 2 runs smoother than 1 also. I've run it on VERY HIGH, 1080p, fullscreen, everything else turned off, and it seems fine to me for single player. If I play it on HIGH, then the only noticeable diff is shooting bullets (example: if you shoot the water, there's more of a delay on VERY HIGH than on HIGH. It doesn't affect your gaming experience though if you're just playing singleplayer).

Config look good. Do not order from the Dell site. Contact a sales rep. for some discount.

I do not mean to hi jack this topic as I am in a similar situation with TC. My order is still in process, and out of the blue, the 6990 came out. Is the upgrade from 6970 a big boost? Or just stick with 6970 and be done with it. Last week, I thought I'm getting the best graphics card, now I don't even see it being the best. I will use the laptop mainly for gaming. I really want to play The Witcher 2 on max settings.
This is my first post but I've been lurking for a few weeks now. -
Dont worry.
Here have a look at this.
Radeon HD 6990 vs GeForce GTX 580 - AMD Radeon HD 6990 Video Card Follow-Up Review | [H]ard|OCP
P.S. Thanks for all the answers guys.Really appreciate it. -
Thats a desktop card review - not a mobile version review.
-
At first I was like "aw shoot, just bought this lappy and already new gpus come out." Then I went and did a gaming benchmark and gpu comparison between the 580m, 6990m, and 6970m on notebookcheck, and there's only a 35mhz increase in shader and core speed for the ATI cards, and only a 3-4fps increase in Crysis 2 and only a 1fps increase in SC2 between the 580m and 6970m.
I guess I shouldn't be that sad, right? -
Im exactly in the same situation. I believe its not a big deal, but certainly we would like to get an ati 7000 series next year. nonetheless, the sadness feeling will remain, cause we thought: " i have the most powerful gpu..."
-
Ya. But look. At least we've prolly got the most powerful gpu among folks we know, lolz. Only people that I know of that have more powerful laptops are folks that I don't even know in real life (NBR buddies) heheh. Everyone I know in real life that has a lappy either has a sucky one for work/school, a netbook, or a stupid-Mac.
-
Right on point with that one, especially the part about the stupid Macs. I lose a lot of respect for people when they pull out their Mac.

(It wont let me put it by itself so ignore this part of the post)

Oops sry.I must have been tired.

Thank you
I knew I wasn't seeing things yesterday with those small fps increases
I'm still very happy with my purchase. Remember y'all: When we bought our 6970s, it was top-of-the-line at the time
-
Hehe.
The 6970 is still a beast
-
Im in the same position, I just checked alienware website again here in ireland and today they added the 580 gtx to their range for 290 euro extra.
I had a small issue with my lappy on arrival with a wire beeing loose on the power button connector but since i fixed that it works like a charm and I don't fancy sending it back and waiting god knows how long(1 month maybe) + paying 290 euro extra when im not going to max out the 6970 that much anyway, 1-5 fps don't matter to me as long as the game is smooth and I have a laptop that wont brake down for 1-2 years. If it does break down I will send it back and if im in my 21 days ask for an upgrade
And also +1 to what dookie11 said. I do have the best lappy by far from my friends -
Yup. You may also have a lappy that's better than most of your friends' desktops too!
Is this a good gaming laptop or is it outdated? Help please
