New pictures added. scroll down to post #8
Hello!
I asked a few questions about my screen in the thread "lcd-swap" http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/571131-lcd-swap.html , but I decided to make my own thread now so I can elaborate it more, with better pics, better description etc. Note this is not crossposting. I decided I should not borrow someone else's thread.
Ok, the screen looks like this form a front view:

And like this from a tilted side view:

I have almost a year left on the warranty, the computer is only a few weeks old (the r2 is still available here in europe). This computer is not a refurb.
I have called dell and asked them about this. I also sent them this picture. They told me it is not covered by the warranty, as it is "not that bad".
1) What do you guys think? Do you find it bad?
2) Will it get worse with time?
3) Do you think it should be replaced although dell says no?
Edit: This is a CCFL panel, the RGB led is not available anymore.
Thanks in advance!

1) I don't think it's that bad.
2) Mine looks kinda like it. I have an R1 so it's almost 2 years old and the screen still looks the same. So I don't think it'll get worse with time.
3) Well, if you really think it's bad and you're not satisfied with it, I guess you could always keep complaining. I wouldn't bother if I were you though. -
Is the warranty similar where you are from? I would freak if mine looked like that. 30 days here and it's a no questions asked return. I would call back and say you are returning it. Chances are try will replace it or offer you $$ to keep it.
-
Overall I am satisfied with the computer, except maybe the screen... -
Did you call within the 14 days ?

You need to get angry with them. Tell them you called and that they said it's normal. Tell them it's not normal and unacceptable that their alienware brand sell such poor quality product. I would be seriously angry.

Guys, Thanks for the answers.
I took new pictures with a better camera so you can have a clearer picture of it.
Displaying pure black
The glow is white not blue. the camera took 3 out of the 4 pure black pictures with an incorrect tint

How do you guys find theese pictures? This camera is better than the previous one, so the issue should be more visable.
+1 to Thatoe and Emm3 once 24 hours have passed (I need to wait 24 hours before I can give + rep to people again)
Thanks in advance! -
Hey guys, could someone take a look at the new pictures (especially the last one) and reply if you think its normal or not?
I am very generous with giving people + rep for good replies, I have already given Thatoe and Emm3, and I will give rep to other good answers.
I am very desperate about this matter,
Thanks again in advance! -
I still think your screen is fine.
It's called backlight bleed and as far as I remember, a lot of R1 users had it.
Since you don't have the RGB screen, it might be the same one as R1.
Maybe your screen has a little bit more bleeding than mine, but as long as it's not bothering you during regular use, just leave it.
It just bothers you more if you are sensitive and keep looking for it. -
I wish I could + rep the same person twice
-
I don't know if that is normal on the CCFL screen or not, but my RGB had zero bleeding. Personally, I don't think that is quite normal. It is usually ok to have a slight bit that is very light to see on a black background, but your bleed is pretty heavy IMO.
I would definitely get that replaced. If you can see that even in that colored photo, then it needs to be replaced. I would have flipped out on them if they told me that was normal and returned the system immediately.
Of all the R1's and R2's I have seen, with RGB and CCFL, I have not seen that bad of a backlight bleed. -
I agree. A slight amount of bleeding usually occurs on all screens, especially black. However, when the bleed is significant enough to be AS visible as it is on the colored photo, I would replace it.
-Forgot to mention, is the picture taken in a normal viewing position? -
Guys, thanks again. + rep to both (after 24 hours again, because I need to wait before the system allow me to rep again...)
Jestare the photos are taken from a normal viewing position without any tilt or turn. -

Guys, "screen bleeding" can be found on all types of backlit screens, unfortunately, at different levels, it's a matter of build quality and/or lcd opacity(when the LCD doesn't block the light at 100%).
The only way to "fix" this is by replacing the screen or reviewing the model before purchase.
Cheers -
UPDATES
Hey guys, I have called Dell again today, and sent them all the pics. Once again they said it was "normal" and that they had compared with a reference machine they had...
They said that they will replace it if it gets worse though. I guess I will have to learn to live with this issue
Anyway thanks guys for your support in this issue -

That's a bad rep.
Get somebody with the same screen to give you some photos in similar tests and show them the difference! -

Getting angry won't help at all !!
And yes, ask to talk to a senior manager directly, stay polite (counts a lot) and told you if possible run the same tests with somebody here with the same screen and show them the photos. -
Stand your ground! -
Thanks again for your support guys,
Dell refuses to budge, so I will try to escalate this tomorrow because the regular support is going to close in an hours time. I will upgrade my warranty to 3 years NBD aswell, so if the things gets worse they will have to replace it even if it take years.
If anyone out there has the 900p or 1200p ccfl screen aswell, could you please post an image so I can show them that is is not normal.
Edit: new thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/571390-request-m17x-owners-ccfl-screens.html
Thanks in advance!
Edit: A new picture on how bad this actually is:
