FYI, I have the latest version of Command Center installed from Dell's website for the m17xr3.

The issue I am having is the Command Center is causing Windows 7 to wait for it to close before I can restart or shutdown. This is every time I shut down or restart the computer.

If I exit the Command Center from the system tray, I don't get the message.

Can I uninstall Command Center and use the version for the m18x? Will that work without hosing my system?

Anyone else have this issue with command center?

    Try reinstalling .NET Framework 4.0

I have had this exact same issue every time even after quite a few re-installs of windows 7. I would have to wait an extra 10-20 seconds for Command Center to shut down. Drove me nuts, so I just deleted it from startup (using msconfig) and just loaded it whenever I wanted to change my keyboard theme.

But ever since I've changed over to an SSD, this issue is pretty much obsolete now and let it start with my computer.

    Remedy, power drain your system:
Unplug the power cord and battery.
    Unplug the CMOS coincell battery.
Depress the power button for 30seconds.
Put everything back together and see if you still have the issue.

If you still have the issue, uninstall CC, reboot and reinstall the latest M17x R3 CC version and reboot one more time.

Do you think the controller on the mobo is bad? Everything works, it just is stops windows from shutting down right away.

I will when I get home. I did another clean install so once I get all the drivers installed, I'll do the power drain. Thanks for the help!

Now it is beeping three times over and over. Nmvd, restarted again seems fine. I'll add the drivers and do updates etc. and report back.

Don't forget that CC needs NET framework to function so make sure you have it installed and updated.
    Good luck

I did the power drain before reinstalling the drivers and Windows updates. Still have the same issue.

Should I try the power drain again?

Also should I have downloaded net framework and installed it manually? It applied updates to net framework 4.0 during Windows update so I assumed it was installed.

Try the following, it improved the number of times I receive the "Waiting for Background Applications to Close" message.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SYSTEM / CurrentControlSet / Control. Click on the “Control” Folder. Select “WaitToKillServiceTimeout” Right click on it and select Modify. The default value is 12000. Set this value to 20000. Seemed to improve the situation for me.

katalin, any other suggestions? Should I contact Dell?

Could someone try the AlienFXTester found in the Command Center folder. Its in program files -> Alienware.

What I want to know is, when you try switching to the different colors, does your power button switch as well? or does it stay one color.

Now that I think of it, I also installed the m18x Alienware Command Center which is Version 2.6.10.0 which was realeased April 2011 if I am correct. The m17xr3 downlaod center has version 2.6.2.0 realeased January 2011, so try the m18x Command Center which is the one I have been using for almost a year actually on my 17xr3. It just might fix your problem.

I thought someone earlier said it would brick the board that controls the lights. Can anyone confirm this?

I created a video showing what happens when I click restart. Its not that I need to force the AlienFX Controller to stop, it just takes a couple of seconds longer.

    M17XR3 Shutdown - YouTube

Should I worry about this or not?

So all along you were worried over that? I thought it was an actual delay of a few seconds.
What you have it's normal, sometimes windows waits after other programs to close. I occasionally get that with steam per example. ;)

Its probably 8 of 10 times though if I restart it does that. So don't sweat it? :D

I can confirm 100% that the m18x Command WILL NOT brick your m17xr3. I have done it on my first m17xr3 and my replacement m17xr3 with no problems whatsoever. Plus I believe it even loads faster than the m17x version and seems way more stable, i.e. I don't wait for it to shut down ever. Your results may vary though.

While checking the event viewer, I continually get this Error when I close the lid:
"This driver responded slower than expected to the resume request while servicing the device:"
    \driver\ACPI
Driver Friendly Name: ACPI Driver for NT

    And also:
"This driver caused a delay during standby while servicing a device:"
    \driver\ACPI
Friendly Name: ATAPI IDE Miniport Driver

Is this normal or should I be concerned?
