    Issues with my new m17x

Hey guys, I did a little looking around on the forums before I posted and tried common tips to fix problems (ex. updating all drivers), but I am still having some issues.

I'll be on my computer doing stuff and my computer will just go into sleep mode all by itself. I'm not doing anything super intensive when this happens either, just surfing the web, facebook, gmail, etc. (its happened 3 times now in the 24 hour period I have owned this laptop)

I have a monitor hooked up to my laptop, LG 24", thru the HDMI port. When I push the power button for the computer to come back on after it has gone to sleep, the display on my monitor is not on, it reverts back to the laptop. Then, for some reason, it re-installs all the nVidia High Definition Audio drivers (all 4 of them!). I have to push Win Button + P again a few times to get the display back over to my monitor.

And the other issue I've had is a BSOD. "DRIVER_IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL" was the one that popped up. That has only happened once, so I'm not really sure why... but it happened while I was just surfing the web, not playing any games.

And this is all on top of the fact that my touchpad does not work. I called Alienware tech support and went through a bunch of stuff (2 hours on the phone) and they are sending a technician to install a new touchpad in the laptop.

I've had this laptop now for about 24 hours, and I'm strongly considering returning it and buying something else. I spent a lot of money on this laptop, and to have all these issues right out of the box is ridiculous. I had an ASUS laptop before this and it ran (and still runs) very well, never any issues. Anyways, I hope someone can give me some insight to my issues. Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Here is my dxdiag file...

is it set to Performance profile? And if it is, check your sleep times. make sure it isn't set to sleep after 1 min etc

It was set on "Balanced" so I switched it to "High Performance" just now, but the sleep timers were not at 1 min.

Will reseating the touchpad myself void my warranty? I'm familiar with taking apart laptops (albeit not this one, but I'm sure its not much different).

    Couple of Questions BTW:

Are you still on Factory OS install or did you wipe and do a full reinstall?

When you say you updated the drivers, did you updat from nVidia's website or Dell's support website?

May not matter but could be what's affecting it.

    Thanks

What does event viewer say? Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer -> Windows Log -> Choose System or Application Logs and look for errors (not informational so much, unless it relates) related to the graphics driver or video in general and well as IRQ errors.

also make sure it's plugged in (like the plug in the back isn't loose etc)

I'd let it run for a bit and see if that solved your issues

    I'm on the factory OS.

I updated all drivers from Dell's website, except for the graphics driver, which I got off nVidia's website.

There is one under critical, which I'm assuming is from the BSOD and it's titled "Kernal-Power"... I can provide the details, but its a bunch of numbers and stuff, nothing really that points directly at anything, or at least that I can read.

Under the error section, I see a couple for "Disk" that say "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\DR2", not sure what that means. Thats really all I see under there that sounds anything like hardware, but there are a few others.

I see nothing related to the graphics driver, IRQ or anything video.

Ya, thats the first thing I checked the other day, but I'm gonna leave it on while I go to work with some stuff open and see what happens when I come back. :p

I have noticed though that when the display turns off, when I shake the mouse for it to come back up, the sound has gone from coming out of my monitor (thru the HDMI cable), back to the laptop speakers... And I'm pretty sure when this is happening, the nVidia High Def Audio drivers are being reinstalled. Not sure why this is happening.

I hate to say this (because I did the same as you, updated direct from nvidia) but try rolling back to the latest driver on dells support site. Sometimes the drivers they use on the HW are tied to the bios and throw a damn hissyfit when you get one straight from the manufacture.

Mostly likely right about that being from a BSOD.

That controller error is commonly the error generated when your DVD drive doesn't respond/ react as fast as your os would like if indeed "DR2" is in reference to the opitcal drive's designated partition. Hmmm, will do some digging and see what I can find.

Also did you run a scan for any nasty little buggers that might have gotten in there? I know slim chance, you've had it so little of time but it's worth the check. Try MalwareBytes just for shizzles and giggles.

Ok, I'll try that program when I get home from work later.

I left it running while I went to the gym for a little over an hour, got back and no issues (normally they would have happened by now), so maybe the performance change had something to do with it and might be helping. I'll keep it on while at work and see what happens when I get home.

Thanks for all the help guys. It is much appreciated.

AVG Is fine as afaik. I personally use ms security essentials. I know, who would think MS could produce a good security product but ti really seems to do me well. Had it on my last lappy too. I supplement all my AV with malware tho because most times it can find and clean infections if for whatever reason the AV misses them.

I even run MB over my network. Glad to know the issue is not reoccuring. If it does let us know so we can keep digging.

I'm still having problems where the computer will automatically go into a sleep type mode, display and sound reverts back to the LCD on the laptop, and it locks itself (have to type my password to log back in).

I read some things about the nVidia High Def audio driver being crap which is what the computer uses when you are using the HDMI out... I've tried rolling back the driver and using different drivers, but not having any luck. Any suggestions?

Sorry for the late reply, working on upgrading a network  Anyway, so did the sleep while active problem come back at all ( never mind realize yet again why speed reading is bad for you. I just reread). Also which drivers did you roll back too? I'm assuming the ones from dell support page but just wanted to be sure.

EDIT: Was thinking about this earlier. I am wondering if you can tell me what all your power settings are on? This isn't related to the HDMI out problem but more so the sleep/ re-log problem. There's settings that specify the stuff like what to do when plugged in on battery close lid, idle time, all that. Screen shot should sufice so you don't have to type all that stuff in.

Also remeber to check the setting in alien CC and windows power setting from control panel. These are supposed to work together but I have read other users say they have had to adjust them seperately to sync.

No problem, I really appreciate the help.

Well, the audio driver is weird. It appears that when you have HDMI plugged in it uses the nVidia High Definition Audio drivers. I think the issue may be with the HDMI output, because whenever the computer goes to "sleep" it coincides with these drivers being reinstalled/detected. The reason I put sleep in quotes is because I'm not really sure that is what is happening, but thats what seems like is happening. The external monitor turns off, display goes back to the built-in monitor, and requires me to type password in to get back into Windows. Then I have to push Windows + P to get screen back to the external monitor and I have to go into the playback devices and switch the audio back to the external monitor as well.

The reason I say the driver is weird is because I can't find a driver specifically for the nVidia High Definition Audio. I've done a bit of research and I'm assuming that it is some type of nForce chip and apparently a lot of people have issues with it, but I'm not 100% sure on this because I can't find anything that tells me the part number or anything about this HDMI-out audio device.

I also ran the Alienware pre-boot diagnostics utility and there were no errors reported, so I'm assuming it some type of software/driver issue.

I checked the power settings in CC and they match the settings I have in Windows. Here are the screenshots of the ones I could find related to sleep modes...

I found a generic Microsoft High Definition Audio Driver that is compatible with the hardware that is using the nVidia high def audio driver, so I installed that. Gonna see if that helps at all. I'll report back after work later tonight and let ya know.

Ok so the power setting looks good. Although I am suprised you haven't been having issues with sleep on closing the lid and the laptop monitor not turning back on. That's a known problem that I myself am trying to solve right now (Yay...) Now, I know you're about to pull your hair out (welcome to the world of IT /sarcasm off) but I do have some more questions as I have been researching this while at work.

When you say Nvidia HD audio driver, is it a seperate driver you downloaded or the one bundled with the driver for your 580m card? I only asked because on my card, 460m, the HD driver is bundled with it, not a seperate install.

Also wierd question what brand is the external monitor?

Ohhhh yeah... biggie.. Did you do the Vbios update from dell that was released 10/5?

You can check the version you have here and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWAR\EDESCRIPTION\System

Subkeys to look for are: SystemBiosDate SystemBiosVersion VideoBiosDate VideoBiosVersion

The newest Vbios version is 70.24.2B.00.06, A01. If it not that, you might need to upgrade that, it can affect the HDMI and how it behaves, still searching for the release notes to see what fixes were implemented.

I'm assuming it is the one bundled with the normal nVidia drivers because I cannot seem to find a separate driver for the audio itself.

My monitor is an LG M2780D.

Also, I got back from work and the display had reverted over to the LCD on the laptop, but it did not lock the computer this time or reinstall the drivers for the high def sound. This happened after I got rid of the nVidia High Def sound drivers and replaced them with the generic Microsoft ones... soooo, possibly a step in the right direction, not sure.

One thing I did figure out tho is that the computer can't seem to dim my display. For testing, I set the "Dim Display After" setting for both plugged and battery to 1 minute, left the computer alone for 5 minutes and the monitor had not dimmed at all. Not sure if this is related to it reverting back to built-in display or not, just something to note.

And no, I have not done the vBIOS update. Going to do that right now.

Ok, well some interesting things I have discovered. I'm not really sure what to make of all of it, but I'll just tell you what is happening.

I unplugged all peripherals from the laptop and just used the laptop by itself with only the AC adapter plugged in. Now, keep in mind that my touchpad does not work at all and I received the replacement part already in the mail, and I guess someone is supposed to be coming soon to replace it.

So, with that said, I think that the touchpad issue might be causing a lot of other issues. The replacement part they sent me is not just the touchpad, but basically the entire inside part of the laptop, minus the keyboard. I think that the reason the touchpad is not working, or quite possibly caused by the touchpad not working, is because there is a short in the laptop.

The reason I think this is because when I'm using the laptop with nothing plugged in, if I put my hands in certain places, bend the lid slightly, or pick the laptop up briskly, the display and alienware logo (right above the keyboard) turn off/flicker.

This is not always happening though. I can put my hands in one spot to type on the keyboard and it will cause the display to flicker, but it may not if I put my hands in this spot again. And if I bend the lid, it might not always cause the display to flicker... its different each time, but its pretty consistent on happening.

So, I'm gonna get this part installed and see what that does for me. It might be causing all the issues, I don't know.

This is all great info. Defitnetly sounds like a short/ mobo issue. Make sure you express these things to the tech when he comes. Now I think the monitor switching issue might be related to the mouse issue with the system saying "built in mouse hardware is un responsive so i'm going to kick into standby and revert back". Combine that with a possible mobo short and you have a recipe for a lot of weird seemingly unfixable (by the end user) issues.

One thing I will say is if this keeps happening after the tech comes, you need to call Alienware and demand a new rig because QA obviously missed the mark here. Make sure you do a couple of things in this:

    A) Keep your current system till a new one arrives do not send it back to them unless its for repair (and even then I might tell them to eat it and send you a replacement system because its their fault the system is erroring)

    B) Demand the same or better as far as a replacement. Never settle for their solution. Its your money, your warranty, and your resolution. Don't compromise.

    C) As hard as this is (when they didn't do the right job in the first place) be very respectful. I got a 3d m17x r3 system refurbished. Everywhere I read said you have to buy the 100 bucks 3d glasses on a refurb even if it listed 3d bundle. Well, being nice and playing a little dumb got me my glasses for free. Yes, there was alot of calls involved but in the process but all I lost was a little time. It actually didn't take long to get a resolution and they overnighted everything to me... free.

I'm really sorry that you have been going through this. These are honestly rediculously rocking systems when preforming right. Probably my favorite laptop thus far and I buy at least one new laptop a year for my household and for myself every 2 to 3 years. Point being I hope you stick with it as I think the end product is worth it.

Oh yeah try and talk them into extending your warranty after the problem has been resolved, whether the tech fixes it or they replace.

Ya, I have been working with their customer support. I actually got them to refund 10% of the purchase cost for me to keep the laptop long enough to let the technician come out, replace the part, and see if that fixes the issue.

They are telling me they have to have 3 different service calls before they will authorize a replacement. I'm pretty good at keeping my calm and getting thru to people, so if the replaced part doesn't fix my issues, then I'll go from there.

I'll let ya know what happens with it. Still haven't heard from a technician, might be next week before I do.

I know it is not directly related to the problem of the thread but I couldn't but share my experience with that problem.

For those having a 3D enabled laptop, putting the refresh rate to 120hz manually will cause that issue.

Others have reported the free fall sensor as a potential cause to this, which can be disabled.

Thanks man! Will give it a go! When I want to watch I will have to re-enable the 120 correct?

Actually I think the 3D activates the 120hz by itself. I hadn't touched the refresh rate before and was still able to play in 3D. You're just better keeping everything at 60hz when not using 3d. But you could still do it manually if you really want to.

Anyway this solution can be found on Alienware's site.

Alienware M17x R3: Black Screen when resuming from Stand-by or hibernation | Dell

Pretty well hidden. Guess they don't wanna brag to much about it.

Got the touchpad part replaced and updated to latest nVidia BIOS/Drivers and everything seems to be running great now for the past couple days. The issues I was having have not happened since. Thanks for all your help!
