Will Ivy be compatible with an R3? I'm sure the R4 refresh is coming but since the sockets are the same I assume a bios mod at most would be needed if they update the motherboards. Given that they don't have to it seems unlikely but maybe they will refresh the chipset prior to shipping any Ivys. Anyone have any insights or thoughts? I just read the review on anandtech and became curious...not that way![]()

the ivy bridge will require a new chipset. The current HM67 chip will not support ivy
EDIT: it will support it *technically -

In all fairness, I would do the sameGotta line them pockets and keep them fat. My dope lambo and tight crib aint going to pay for themselves

I'm sure I've read on a couple tech sites that Ivy Bridge is backwards compatible with Cougar Point... I'll see what I can find.
Edit:
Found it:

It would be nice if Ivy Bridge were compatible with current mobile boards(chipset/socket) but I won't worry about it until Intel actually launches them.
-
AnandTech - Intel's Ivy Bridge Architecture Exposed It is compatible with cougar so what other problems could be presented?

Yeah, I figured. I included that at the top. So that's it then? One of the more tech savvy members here or someplace else would have to be willing and able to build a bios for it. Given the performance jump and savings vs a total upgrade it would seem like an opportunity Intel hasn't made available in a long long time - upgrades without the need for an entirely new system. I'm stoked.

Most, if not all 1155 desktop mobos got a BIOS update to support 22nm CPUs already, mine too
but the current CPU is plenty.
As for mobile counterparts: we know so little at the moment and i'm personally not holding my breath. -
Bet mine out performs them anyways

When mine was released I had three choices the 2630,2720, and the 2820 (i got one of the first) and since then I was out of the country on some primative island. Now that I'm back I want to start upgrading but I'm in the wonderful time just before an update in tech when prices drop before popping back up and plateauing. So my inner geek says "wait longer and try an Ivy" while my inner banker says "in 40 days the 2760-2860 will be uber cheap and you can prolly grab a CPU and 580 for $700 and call it a life for this machine". The inner banker usually wins these days but I am intrigued and kinda want to see what the new chips can do. Gratz Widezu, I haven't had an extreme proc in a couple years. I miss getting them for free *single tear* That thing has to be quick!

Pardon my ignorance, but why would you need so much in your cpu? Is it just for show? And widezu69...If you ever want to sell your lappy, I CALL DIBS PEOPLE!!! [:

Most of the time it's fo' 'sho'. I'm a bit of a bencher. I have less hardcore overclocks for everyday life. Stock didn't seem to kick it for some apps that I use. I'm tempted to move to 2960XM so the 2920XM may be up for grabs. Although they are essentially the same chip, 6>2

29 60XM > 29 20XM. Just sold my M15x so have some spare cash lying around. Was thinking of doing the water cooling mod I devised back in my M15x days but I dunno.

-40. Wow, come to AZ. It was almost 75 this afternoon and it's about 60 something now. Nothing like a 100 degree jump to warm the soul and crack the skin. I was thinking the new 760 or 860 but I miss overclocking since I switched to all laptops this year. It's saving me tons of head aches but being able to tweak out performance issues app by app is nice especially when it yield a few more HSs
but yeah, the 2630 and 460 just aren't cutting it. All the mousetraps I've been installing in my wallet are the only thing stemming the tide of splurge.

Especially since i bought a 6990m and it was dead on arrival

I hope you got a refund or exchange. Who was the vender? -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
I hope i get another one in exchange and that i don't have to hunt for such another great deal.
-
damn i just got an m17x r3 off the outlet but i feel like its already going to be obsolete so soon! I have the
2820
8 gb of ram
500gb hd
460M
1920x1080p 120z 3d all for around 1300.
Damn! Whats ivy bridge supposed to do? more power or more batterly life? Because i think this thing i have right now is plenty powerful. As for the 460m, I think its a good card for now, with a max overclock i get around 62C temps and good frames on a mix of ultra/high on BF 3. I want to snag a 580m though. -
DanDan;
Ivy bridge is supposedly going to be able to give you a both major power-boost, aswell as longer battery life when its not utilized fully.
- Scott. -
Crap. im going to want that, I really hope i can install an ivy in my r3.
-
this is why i haven't bought a 2920xm yet. I am waiting for the ivy bridge es to arrive
-
(I wish so)

It will be long to wait untill spring ... I can't o/c more my 2820QM so go to wait.... and don't like it !

More Details on Ivy Bridge Models "S" and "T" Emerge
Not a huge jump in raw power. Intel has said they will delay a quarter, which I still think is part of the after effects of the cougar chip set issues delaying SB from being able to enter the market and maintain momentum. Still looks like a decent evolution and better battery life is always welcomed with a laptop. -
3.1Ghz base clock? Nice basically only 100Mhz lower than a 2920XM's 4 core turbo. Are those Desktop or Mobile CPU's?
-
i thinks these are desktop since their TDP are so high like that
-
Sorry mate those TDP's are not high at all. My 2920XM runs at 85w. Even non-XM i7's are 45W. Desktop CPU's anything between 80-130w.
-
I bet Dell will update the R3 BIOS to support the Ivy Bridge chips. I had an Inspiron 9400 with a 2.0GHz T2500 Core Duo chip for 18 months. When the Core 2 Duo chips were released Dell had an update which supported them with the same chipset. I picked up a 2.33GHz T7600 chip and it installed right in the older chip's socket and it breathed some new life into that machine. I still have it too, pretty nice little machine with the 7950GTX nVidia card, my R3 smokes it of course.
I expect we'll be able to pick up one of the first revision Ivy Bridge chips and roll with them. -
Glad I bought the lowest end processor for my m18x(2670), and still got the right chipset =).
Going to definitely wait till Ivy to be released a pick-up either the 2860 equivalent or the 2920/60 equivalent, since thats basically going to be the best its going to get =\. -
