Im so excited ... my force power are incredible this week... my GF is psychologically ready for me burning money on an alien!

There is a deal valid till 25 nov.. 1 day before black friday sales.. Is black friday sales an USA-only thing according to you ?

I can wait a few days but not more if i want my alien before Xmas (to play with it on my 2 weeks off work) but im affraid to wait and loose the instant deal.

the only "other" option i see in high class video card (which im still not sure) is to go for the 2000$ option with radeon

When I bought my laptop. It showed up at the door and my wife was like what the hell is that. I told her it was my new laptop. When she saw it was an Alienware... She said BRAT and walked away like a good woman.

Yeah my wife wants mine also. She got my Asus G73 which is a great laptop, but it is not an Alienware. I told my wife the same thing.

She is a major WoW player and she loves MMOs. I have been playing MMOs for over 10 years since the beginning of Everquest and she would make fun of me for playing so much. Now she plays WoW 6-8 hour a day and she is on one of the best raid groups on our server. NOW WHO IS THE NERD!!!!

You are not the first who talk about "throttling" which im not really sure of the impact.. im gaming right now on an regular pc with a 9800GTX+ and find it more than ok.. my point being, pretty much any "better" video card will do me just fine!

I dont care that much (or at all) with the 3D part.. if it comes with it.. good.. but its not a deal breaker.. (maybe throttling is one)

but your (and many others) post is exactly why i have a hard time deciding.. they both work well.. (i love what i see from the physX batman video)

 

Throttling on a 580m sucks because when the gpu temp hits 78-79c performance is downclocked huge until the temps drop...then when you hit 79c again, it throttles all over. So if you're gonna get the 580m be prepared to update vbios, repaste GPU etc to keep the gtx 580m temps down

Your desktop is different because it won't suffer from heat the same way a laptop does

 

geez.. that much .. repaste GPU on a new rig == /puke

The only problem with the 6990 which it isn't a problem. Is you can't get the 120 hz screen which can be put into 120 hz mode all the time. Imho I think is a better screen and your not limit to 60 FPS with Vsink on. That was the only reason I went with the Nvidia card really wasn't for 3D which I use once in awhile.

I don't want to discourage you...just be aware of the things that you will 100% have to do if you get the 580m. IF you go 6990, with the money saved, you can get your gf a nice gift to say thanks for all the time she is gonna be spending alone while you game LOL

 

i always fall on this dell fix .. vbios update.. if its anything like updating a regular bios.. i dont see any complication on fixing this

i dont know if the most recent one but it make me beleave its just an update.. i dont plan on re-pasting my gpu, thats for sure!

 

that dell vbios fix still throttles. Just not as much. You will still hit a thermal barrier of 79c when the 580m pulls back and your performance suffers

Anyways, don't worry about repasting. It will take you 15 mins...real simple. I'll help you if you need directions

so the overheating/throttling problem is mainly DELL who put bazooka-joe-bubble-gum grade paste on our alienware high priced cpu.. geez

maybe i over simplify the situation but in 2011.. we should not see that kind of problem..

we are about to buy our first house.. im 31 years old.. dont have a boatload of money in the bank.. the logical thing to do is NOT spend 2000$ on a computer since i got 2 pc and 4 laptop already.. and put the money on a down payment for the house..

that is true! However, you can also make adjustments in your life to compensate. For example. I buy lunch everyday and buy about 2 coffees a day. If i am to cut back and bring my lunch a few times a week and make my own coffee or buy 1 instead of 2, i will save $2500+ a yr.

i got a day max to change stuff but im fixed on the 580M with whatever result/fix/mod or maybe i wont have any problems like some M17x users.. if im lucky... if not, i'll fix it or wait for a patch!

Congrats Doc!!! You will love your new rig!!! I personally like the ATI 6990 over the 580, but I am an ATI fanboy!!! Any card you pick you will love your new laptop.

Ditch the RAM, buy stock. Ditch the RAID, SSD's are the way to go. So just buy it with one HDD and buy SSD later, same goes for the RAM.

You got the 3D screen but no blu ray optical drive, how are you going to plan on watching 3D movies? As far as I now they only come on blu ray discs. 2900 is alot for a M17x R3. The 3D system costs 2000 dollar with the 560m, so about 2150 dollars with the 580m and shipping.

 

i recommand that you take a trip to alienware.CA and that you see for yourself that there is a big difference between the option you can have in canada versus alienware.COM who sell different deal)

My 4 options that are not that much customizable are this

If i was getting the cheapest one at 1500$.. and remove the crappy video card that come with it for an 6990 or an 580M (which is the only option.. we cant choose any 560m) it cost +600$ so you get to the point of being 200 short of the priciest of the M17x .. the one i decided to go for a few hours ago..

then lets say i get the only other option that have an ok video card (6990)... its still 2000$ and you get 16gb of ram with ZERO option to "ditch" em..

if you find me a solution... im all yours!

 

Doc, don't do that, with these specs I think you are paying about 800 for ram! gtx 580m geared m17x is already 1600 right now. Just build yours from scratch from that link, I am sure you can add SSD and upgrade CPU under that price (my signature costed 2400 directly from Dell website = I got screwed in price, but still better than those specs...)

 

Care to point me in the right direction that i clearly never seen a "build from scratch" from alienware.CA ?

All i see is customize those 4 ones .. with very few options..

I already have an SSD at home.. if i could i would even ditch the OS and install my 64bits ultimate.. i "could" save if i had full control on the pieces! (I guess the OS is mendatory but i sure agree on getting better ram or something.. later.. if there is something better from another store)

did i mention its the first time i buy from DELL

 

there is a link at the forum which takes you to configuration page starting from gtx 580m, 2670qm, 500 7200rpm, 4GB 1600mhz, 900p monitor and so on, just search it and configure from that page, I am sure you can do better than that. But about CA, I really don't know, maybe the offer is valid for US?

 

thats what SlickDude80 was telling me.. cant order from the US side since they wont ship to canada.. and my 10% alienware deal is from laptop that come from alienware.CA

im kinda stuck with those less attractive ones.. (you guys have better option.. 20% deal on video card update.. many things i would like to have as options)

560m's aren't nearly as powerful, but they don't have the throttling issues that the 580m (at least that I know of). My 460m which is very similar to the 560m never gets over 66C OC'd Hope this helps a bit

 

the european AW prices are the craziest. The rig in my sig was €3500 a year ago, convert it in dollars and in the US you could have top R2 model with XM CPU RAID SSDs, all TactX peripherals and orion bag or backpack for that.. I could get it for less if I chose less ram and smaller HDD, but still it would be a solid amount of money.

 

the 460m may be a lil les powerfull but still beat the crap out of my actual old school 9800GTX+ that i play with now..

with that in mind.. all the new video card in the AW are good/better to me

[but of course i cant resist getting the latest possible]

is a 3D monitor totally useless without the BRay drive ?

 

well you could play 3D games, but watching 3D movies would always be nice too if you need to you can always put a BR Drive in later. This requires you to take the laptop totally apart i believe so keep this in mind

 

I wouldn't say it is useless, it is 120Hz and folks here report it is brighter and better than non 3D 60Hz panel.

 

Doc, if you are getting m18x make sure you get crossfirex or SLi.. otherwise there is no point, 5.5 kg

still not sure.. sick of hearing of throttling problem, read everything on the web there is to read about a fight between 580M and 6990.. its always the same thing... 50/50 on each side

i went a few minutes ago telling me.. go for a 6990 for the 300$.. and slap in a SSD 256gb instead.. now i wonder if i want a 580m + ssd

anyway.. with no throttling, that would be easy for me.. but.. if the 6990 just plain work.. with no overheating, i should not hesitate either to go the 6990 way.. all of it because i hated my ol' radeon 1600 back a few year ago

I also made a mistake about the price, total would be something like:2300 for the 3D system with the 580m on alienware.com. With coupons you can bring it down alot. Dont forget about tax and higher shipping cost.

 

well, I don't have throttling issues as of yet, max temp is 71C at crysis 2, skryim is averaging around 64C (it was 62C when I first got it ), but a lot of people seem to complain about throttling, at the same time, people like me, don't say that we don't have the issue all over the thread either... your call
