I just added ssd to my system.
M17X R2 with dual 5870's, 218gb hhd, and i5 cpu.
I'm not into benchmarking and stuff.
Just bought ssd for better gaming experience.
I never used 2 different hard disks before so I have few questions I wanted to ask.
I'm going to use ssd for booting and going to install games on it and use the oem hdd as storage driver.
Do I need to install an OS on the hdd also?
And I was confused while installing apps. Where do you guys (for those of you who uses ssd for booting and gaming) install all the apps and stuff? If you install on hdd, how do you change the default installation path?
I think I have more questions but can't think of them right now.
And sorry for messy write up lol. English is my second language![]()
Oh btw, booting time was way faster than HDD XD
Anyways thank you guys in advance!

1) When u install the os from the cd, you just select your SSD
2) when os is loaded to your SSD, games should in default install on the program files or program files (x86) on your C drive, which is your SSD.
3) My suggest for you for your next upgrade is to get a i7 xm. That could have made more difference in gaming WHILE you game since i5 is getting out dated. -
Hi, I would always suggest to install at least 2 partitions on your OS hdd/ssd.
For win7 ~40-50 GB for the OS and "normal" programs, the rest (thinking of a 128GB ssd e.g.) for games and/or personal data.
The reason is easy, you don't have to think about saving your private data, bevor wiping drive c: for whatever reason...
-also many games are able to run without being installed correctly (steam for example - put it on drive D and you can play the games, you installed under your old win install, after a fresh win install very soon...)
On the ssd I would (did) of course install the OS, for verrrryyy faaaast bootup and also (into the second partition, provided there is one...) the most often used games.
In my case e.g. BF3, since the map loading was a pain from my 5400rpm hdd. It sometimes took 3 minutes... now, from ssd it changed to approx. 30-40 seconds
System bootup (after BIOS being initiated) 12 secs!! Simply great
----------------------------------
But another thing:
I did the same, installed SSD (Samsung 830; 128GB) and my R2 is not able to wakeup from sleep or hibernate... I get a bluescreen plus restart.
Can anyone help me with that?
System runs perfectly, except this standby/hibernate issue -
hmm.. I don't think both of you guys didn't answer my question. Maybe I wasn't clear. I do have 2 different partitions(plus recovery and stuff), which are c(ssd) and f(hdd). The first time when I installed OS on ssd, f driver had all the system files and stuff because I didn't format it before I installed SSD. It was taking a lot of space so I just deleted everything by formatting it. My question is, do I need to install OS on f driver too in order for apps to work properly if I were to install them on f driver. If it's not necessary, how do I change the default installation path to f driver.
Thanks for reading guys. And @Dellienware - my next mod is going to be i7 920 or 940xm. Just waiting for good prices on them. I got ssd for faster game loads and stuff -
Any info on this guys?

Ok maybe this will help. I always install the OS on the SSD. I don't put games on it as my 7200 rpm HD is fast enough for games. And the games I play are on Steam and Orgin on the second HD. Now for short cuts to my games, after OS install I go to game folder of steam and make a new short cut from it and send it to task bar..or desktop as I broke the old short cuts. I do this for all short cuts going to your other drive. You can to the same if putting the drive into another system I have even copied my hole game drive and redone the shortcuts. Saves down loading every game. Hope I answered you question..

Hello, as far as I understand you, you simply put system (win) on drive c.
You may install EVERY program, game, whaterver, on your f drive.
You simply choose the install path manually by changing the original one, the program or game asks for, to install it to.
e.g. you install ICQ it would like to go to c:\programs\.... by default - and it tells you so. In 99% of cases you can manually select another one.
Everything will work fine, no matter what path or drive you decide to install to.
(Because that is what an installation intends to do... telling your System, where to find the needed files of the program you'd like to run)
Did I get your point?!
(Unfortunately I don't know, where to change the default path from c:\programs to f:\"yourchoice"... I simply do it manually for games at least.)
EDIT
--- I found a german site, explaining how to change standard paths for programs, but you'd have to change your registry and that is nothing I would recommend, unless you are a bit familiar with that und know what you do...
They say registry keys need to be customized for:
- ProgramFilesDir
- ProgramFilesPath
- and 2 more for x64 systems...

You may ask google for that...

On my 120gb SDD i have C partition size set at 30GB, its enough for basic programs and drivers, whats left, 81,7GB is for games, 500GB HDD is for music and films and images .VCD .ISO.
I keep everything what i use the most on my SSD, it's pretty obvious.
Is somebody uses Photoshop, antivirus it is also recomended to install it on SSD.
81,7GB is more than enough for games, unless somebody is a NO LIFE person and he's ''games'' folder size exceeds 200GB.
You simply choose where to install things by priority/usage, and you are free to go to install things on F:\, but remember, all drivers, and programs that are booting with windows or are in autostart should be on your SSD, otherwise it will slow down boot time.
Since i installed win7 on my ssd, it is quick like win XP, love it.
cheers
Just added ssd to my system(M17X R2)
