So, I finally cracked. I missed my RGB LED and the aluminum casing. Tax refunds and a recent raise has put a little extra cash in my pocket, and to say I'm not on my laptops at least 8 hours a day would be a lie, so I made room and bought this from the outlet:
Lunar Silver
i7-920XM
Xfire 5870's
8GB RAM
320GB HDD (will upgrade to SSD upon arrival, I have a spare)
RGB (naturally)
I paid just under $2,000 (seems like an amazing deal?). I'm hoping the performance of the R2 will match my R3, except in games where XFire isn't fully supported which I'm willing to put up with.
I'm going to move my R3 into my office at work, which I think will actually do nicely because the machine is so sexy and a bit more understated than the R2.
Without going through the entire owner's lounge for the R2 (I simply don't have time right now, I apologize for requesting repeat information), is there any major issues with the Xfire 5870's that I'm going to need to look out for? I had an R2 a year ago with Xfire 4870's and it was very problematic which ultimately resulted in me selling it. I'm hoping to have better luck this time around.
Essentially, I just want to hear about any "major" issues to watch for that anyone has been having with their R2's. Especially anything with recent drivers. You don't have to go in depth, a bullet list or a single line will do (since I'm sure it's all in the owner's lounge).
Yes, I know I'm a nut with laptops (it's why I'm here), but like I said I use a computer at least 8 hours a day, sometimes more, so I need to be happy on the machine I'm working on. I also have differing uses for my laptops between work, school, gameplay, and one for in-bed use (my XPS).

I would check if the 5870 firmware is up to date (from DELL website).
The 5870s I have give no sign of problem in Xfire and I am running 11.5 from ATI.
The only item you should look for is the laptop will not last long (around 1.5 hours with casual browsing, word editing, a little autocad, or just light usage and I have the screen brightness at 15% and CPU max. at 25%; I have the 940 XM) on battery.
I don't have any other problem with mine and hope the same for you.
BTW, DELL's bios allows you to OC the CPU up to 5% (and ajusting the voltage too) but if anytime your computer goes to sleep and wake up, that 5% OC is reverted back to default; means no OC. This has been the issue since bios version A02. Many Alienware tech. support personnel claim that DELL does not support this feature. It's a whole lot of mess you don't want to read through. A few tech. support say they will forward the issue to the engineers and I still have not seen the issue fixed yet and it has been over 8 months.
Enjoy the laptop. -
