It sounds like it but truelife is a new introduction on the latest 17x 120hz model, so seems strange

    Hi

Thanks for the reply, I presume it doesn't say 120 then it's probably not.

I use to have a dell 7720 (17r se) and that came with a trulife 120hz screen and that was about 8 months ago

Perhaps I will ring them and ask

Thanks alot, if anyone else has any thoughts please post

    Thanks

Yeah a call should clear it up.

'3D' is the usual description for the 120hz monitor and the 3D glasses. Maybe it was refurbished with a later screen but I think this is unlikely, and 3D will probably not work since dell have the display types and GPU ID coded into the BIOS for 3D activation. maybe just a bad cut and paste description?

basically only stock displays and GPU's work with 3D on any model. If the ID changes (like if you were to use a 7xx GPU) then 120hz works fine but no 3D option.

Edit: just looking over your last post!

Yup looks like the 3D 120 model. The LCD back cover cover is different on the 3D as the panel has a different thickness, and that part is listed. Only the truelife bit is probably wrong.

Make sure the glasses are included as I've seen outlet 3D machines sold without them. You can find them sold separately on ebay and IMO worth it - I love the 3D gaming :D

Let me know how it goes ;)

The scratches and dents covers any visible faults that would not be there on a new machine - stock statement so no comebacks. From others I have spoken to there are usually no scratches or dents. maybe some wear marks. This is a dice roll but I wouldn't expect anything too bad or annoying.

Edit: You may want to ask about extending the warranty if you're looking to keep it. You'll need an active one if you decide to sell it later anyway or or it's not going to be worth much. And it's cheaper when purchased up-front :(

What did you pay if you don't mind me asking?

    Hi mate

Good idea, I'm planning on keeping it along time .

Would have loved the gtx 780 but its way out of my budget. Wanted to get on the nvidia ladder and I thought the gtx 680m is a good start

I paid £1,026 inc vat and del

I will ring them in the morning about extended warranty, they are closed Sundays in the UK

    Thanks for all your help

That's a nice deal. Hopefully everything works out.

As Micky said, the M17x R4 did not have a TrueLife display, so, that must be some sort of mistake.

That sounds a great price to me - less than half a new one of similar config. You even got the SSD cache drive so a dedicated SSD can wait a while - if needed at all. That's pretty much a topped out R4 - sweet :D

The 680 is going to be great for all the latest titles - even my 675 is good enough for me with only a couple of settings dropped down.

Watch out for the latest drivers though. NV have been having a lot of issues and the R4/680/120hz was having problems with a blank screen. It may work for you but the best known working version is 314.33. Just run it through it's paces on whatever driver is there before updating ;)

Just to clarify: If it's an M17x R4, it does not have TrueLife technology, no matter what the representative is saying. He/She is confusing the NEW Alienware 17's screen with the M17x R4. The reason I mention this is because I don't want you to expect one thing and get another, and then freak out...I've seen this happen before on this forum.

    Your screen is: 17.3" 120Hz WLED FHD (1920 x 1080) w/3D Bundle

Congrats on the new system. You'll love it...

Agree with J.Dre. Truelife only appeared with the new 17 so it can't be. The screen is great anyway, except for the direct light reflections, but it looks great in games. Hope you get the glasses, it's well worth a look to see if it suits you. A lot of people that see 3DTV think this system is like that. Way better, totality different technology delivery :D

You got a great bargain. I'm sure you well enjoy it :D :D

Just a little update my m17x refurb has been shipped today.

The worrying thing is I managed to get the service tag and the machine was first registered in June 2012. And it was registered in south Africa of all places.

Just hope its not to roughed up when it arrives. Good news it has warranty till June 2015 :)

See what happens early next week

    Thanks

    Hi

Just an update, been to disappointed to update any earlier...

The m17 arrived about 3 days ago and was a little disappointed with the machine I received, basically most of the feet are missing from the bottom cover and it rocks when on a flat surface, I suppose it's not a major thing but surely they could have solved that at very little cost... Clearly not and it's down as cosmetic

The main problem is when the screen is closed it doesn't line up with the palm rest. It's about 4mm off the edge of the palm rest. It's hard to explain but I was really disappointed that they couldn't be bothered to fix it before sending considering they took 7 days from the point of order to the point of dispatch.

I have attached a picture it doesn't show it properly, it looks worse in real life.

Spoke to dell and they are not really that bothered and ally's they would do is collect it and refund.

But the thing is this is the ideal machine with good specs that I wanted and hard to find second hand

Does anyone know what may be causing the screen to be like this, I have taken the machine apart and can't see anything obvious

The overall machine looks a bit old and a bit scruffy [IMG]

    Thanks a lot

So is it true life..... Also this is common, refurbs come as is. As for the screen, i would use the instruction manual for the 17x and check and make sure the brackets holding the screen in place are secure correctly. This would require you to open up the machine, but that would be my first place to look.

    Hi

I've not even checked if it's trulife, how would I check?

Is this the hinges attached to the screen that sit inside the base with 3 screws either side to hold it in place

    Thanks a lot

If it's a 120hz 3D display then it will show up in the driver config:
    View attachment 102815

Don't know how to tell if it's truelife but that would be strange for dell to use a part not supplied with that model. Maybe get the device ID/OEM from device manager and ask here. Hopefully our friendly dell rep will look it up ;)

I wonder if the hinges have been overstressed, or even if dell fitted a truelife 120 for some reason and it does not fit perfectly

Dice roll I'm afraid with the general exterior condition with the outlet, your only option is to just return it for a refund if it's too tatty'

I have stripped it down and taken photos of both hinges

The right one has a gap where you can see the table, the left one has no gap

There are no adjustments on the hinges, so I'm a bit stuck of what to try to be honest

Did you read the last two pages? The M17x R4 does not have TrueLife technology.

As for the scuffs and whatnot: you did order a refurbished system. I'm not sure why the screen is like that, though. It could be that the previous owner had messed up the hinges by picking it up by the screen. I've heard of this happening before, and it may have made the hinges go off balance.

Good news, now all you need to do is track down some glasses to check out some excellent 3D gaming (BM AC and Crysis 3 are great starting points). Get ready to be amazed again! I'm not the only one that thinks it really adds to the gaming experience - way better than anything you may have seen with 3D TV!

You should easily max out BF3, have fun :D

    Update

What a laptop apart from the couple of issues I have that hopefully one way or another will get sorted

Played BF3 for about 3 hrs last night setting all high @ 1080p

Fps steady in the late 60's early 70's with the bf4 beta driver. Very please with that

Overall very pleased, looking at an ssd upgrade soon.

Thanks for all the help and advice
