Its a refurb 17x r2 with i7 920 and CF 5870s running bios A09. I immediately got the "PS not supported error message." I took the battery out and it loads with the same 2 beep message and then shut off when I got on the net. I went to the bios screens F2 and then disabled the message under Power settings. I am not sure what that will do. I scrolled through some old long 12 page threads but it stopped in July. What is the fix for this? I know the R3 is out and everyone is excited but I really would appreciate any help on resolving this!

It is the big thick one I guess. I don't know what a slim looks like. It sure is a hell of a lot bigger than my old m15x. It does say it is a 240 ps with Dell labeled on the brick. It says Rev "A02"

My drivers in the device manager for the 5870s are 8.763 dated 8/10/10. Are those good drivers or should I update? I know newest isn't always best. Thanks for the help.

its the adapter they gave you, ask for a slim one thats was actually made for the M17x. the laptop doesn't recognized that psu as the M17x one.

So is the only fix a different charger? If so I will deal with it. However, are there any fixes? I mean I would assume people found a fix awhile ago? Or is a new charger the only way to get this working?

Edit: Do I need to contact the outlet or some other support? I haven't had warranty on my 15x in a few years so it was before dell aquired AW.

There's no way around it because it's not the correct charger. I tried everything to get it to work but the charger was never recognized. I was only able to run the laptop but not charge my battery. The charger also makes the system think it was on battery mode when it wasn't.

just call tech support and tell them the laptop doesn't recognized that psu and the laptop would not charge using it. dell is much easier to dell with compared to old aw.

OK easy enough thanks for the help. Will they allow me to keep this PS while they send me the other one and then I can send the old one back in a prepaid fedex that they ship to me with the new one? Or are they going to make me send it in, wait for them to get it and then send it out? Grrr frustrating! Thanks for the quick replies everyone.

No they will overnight it over if you call early enough and it should have a prepaid label for you to mail the crap one back.

OK good. Well I just got disconnected talking to an agent and they said "refurbished do not have warranty and you will have to pay for a new charger." As I tried to clarify...I got disconnected...playing the waiting game again. Love dell :)

I'm surprised they said that. When you purchased your refurb, which warranty did you choose?

WOW! If you have another rep tell you that refurbished units don't have warranties ask to talk to a manager, the only way you won't have a warranty is if you bought it as "user refurbished" from someone other than Dell. This is just the tip of the iceberg with Dell.

Yeah I found it kinda odd they said that. I hope this wasn't like the refurbs sold on ebay or something.

Ok well i got the proper AW support and after remote Dx, and an updated bios flash, they are sending me out a new PS, new Battery and cable. So hopefully this will resolve. Thanks for everyone's help. Grrr. Gonna try to benchmark on the AC only without the battery until my new PS unit arrives.
