First the adapter says "The AC adapter currently connected is not supported", and the dvd drive refuses to read dvd and continues making a strange sound every 3 seconds. A rather disappointing start...

EDIT: Might have jumped the gun a bit. DVD seems fine now. Will try that power button method now.

EDIT2: the adaptor is no good.

If it is plugged through an UPS plug it to the wall socket.
    UPS overload.

    It is a wall socket.

EDIT: Strangely, the wall socket below it worked... My old 17'' lap uses the 'not working' socket fine though. Not sure what to do.

You could run Dell Diagnostics reboot>F12>Run Diagnostics.
    Power adapter R3/R4 240 Watt.

No it appears the OP got it working trying a different outlet. You might want to try this as well.

Turns out the psu plug wasn't all the way in to the back of the laptop.

    Thanks though :)

Probably the wall socket was not providing enough power to the PC. I'm glad that you fixed it so easily. Enjoy your new lappy :)
