2 months after my warranty expires and now my M17xr2 wont boot. When i press power everything lights up and i hear the fan kick on for a second or 2 and then it just sits there. Nothing comes up on the screen but all lights are on.

    Anyone have any ideas?

As an edit this seemed to have started when i closed the lid while it was powered on..and it wont boot up anymore since.

    hm! Sounds wierd.

Try to do a power-drain, it might be frozen in an wake-up state (the screen / lid sensor!)

To do a power-drain, take out the battery, and take out the CMOS clock-battery that sits just under the back-plate.

Keep the power-button pushed for about 30-40 seconds.

Put everything back together, and see if that helps you any!

Also, please put your specs in the thread or your signature, it could be vital for us to help you!

    Keep me posted,
    - Scott.

Try to connect an external monitor and see if you get image display there.. maybe the flex connector is broken. Or something.

Power it up. Look carefully at the alien head (the eyes) on top of the keyboard. If after 5-6 seconds they start to blink (usually then it starts reading from the HDD to boot up windows) then you are semi-ok.
This means that the computer boots and starts working normally but the screen has a problem. Believe me, this is the far better case than not seeing the eyes blink, because if they don't then there's somewhere a hardware issue, which kinda leaves you clueless.

If this is the case then you have to start disassembling add remove parts till it works.

Finally, after you boot and you don't see the eyes blink, wait for 5-10 mins and listen carefully if the Fan starts. If it does, well...then you motherboard will most likely be ok, everything else is less of a problem

Call Dell. 2 months might not even be a biggie.
