Hello everyone, I just placed a order for a m17x and needed some tips. Do you think I can call Dell to get a discount, they have not started to produce it yet. I paid a hefty price in my eyes. Can I play most games on max settings, I got a gtx680m. Also, is there any good 3d games and at that is the 3d even worth it? Thanks in advanced.

One more think how can you play a game on a monitor? Is it worth it and will the games be just as good if you play it on a monitor? Can you play it in 3d as well on a monitor?

You won't be able to get a discount after its ordered you could cancel find some good voucher codes/ dell rep and get a decent discount. I got a combined discount of 20+% overall. But it depends on your region as well. I don't have 3D on mine so I can't say.

Just plug a VGA or HDMI cable in to play on a monitor. Your monitor has to be 3D compatible to work in 3D. I would personally either use the laptop screen or maybe plug it into a tv if I really wanted to.

Hi! I play all my games on my 675 at max (except AA) and they play great. Have to lower some settings for 3d but nothing I can actually see. The 680 is way more powerful so you you should be fine.

For external 3D you need a 120hz monitor (not a TV/monitor with high refresh rate) with a miniport or DVI-D input. You use a cable from the AW miniport. You can use HDMI for non 3D and a 3DTV (need hdmi 1.4 cable). On the 3D TV you use the glasses that came with the TV and it's not that great - but I find it acceptable. Downside is that at 1080i the 3DTV refresh rate of 24hz is useless for gaming. Way too much input lag. In 720p (50hz) it works fine and on my 37" it looks as good as 1080.

As for is 3D worth it? - I say yes very much so. If you're into on-line gaming then it is not for that but some single player games are truly awesome :D I recommend getting one of the portal games from steam (cheap now) to see perfect 3D, and a great, funny story. Alienware are in the credits so they had some input into the games :D

Assassins Creed - Revelations, Batman Arkham City, and Max Payne 3 are my favourites - very good and immersive 3D. Unfortunately two latest games are frankly poo in 3D. Assassins Creed III and Far Cry 3. Both very pretty games that will push your hardware but 3d sucks the fat one

I travel heavily so that's the main reason I got this laptop. The desktop I got at home is way weaker compared to this laptop. So when I am at home and want to play on a monitor, could I still game on high settings. Also other than a monitor what do I got to buy to game on the monitor. Will I have to run many writes from the laptop to the monitor. Will playing in 3d be the same as playing on your laptop? Sorry for all the questions.

As long as the monitor supports 1920x1080 or better you can play on the same settings as the internal display. It will have to be a 120hz monitor to work with the nvidia 3D glasses though.

You only need one cable, from the display miniport to the monitor (whatever connection that has). You can use a HDMI cable but that is usually for a combination TV/monitor where the primary function is HDTV. Both carry the audio.

Will it be the same 3d on an external? Yes it will IF you get a 'lightboost' capable monitor, but even if not it should be very close. On a 3D TV you use a HDMI cable and the glasses that come with the TV. I have one (decent panasonic) and it's pretty good at 720p but not as good as the AW 120hz panel (and my 3dTV is 400hz)

    HTH :)

You can max out every single game. But for me, to get every game maxed out AND over 60fps... all I do is turn off AA because you really can't tell the difference at all :p

But yeah the card is insane... Get a game, go to settings and max it out without having to worry xD Enjoy :)
