Boy oh boy, today I got my Alienware, and I have to say, I'm impressed. This thing is beautiful! Along with it I received my Orion Messenger bag, and that too is simply amazing.

I havent been able to actually run any games or do anything really, as I don't want to do anything until I get my SSD, cant wait. Hopefully I can watch a blueray movie on it soon enough. Any ideas on what I can try out before receiving the SSD? It should be here tomorrow.

If you're on the edge and looking for portable power, definately go for this baby, I really don't see why people say its massive, I think its size is perfect, and to be honest it isnt that heavy unless you're planning to take it to school/work.

All in all, very happy with the purchase,
    Peace

Glad to here it. Nice rig you got there. Prehaps you could do 3D mark 06 and post your score. Mine was 19479 with the 6970. Would love to see what the improvement is with the 6990.

Well, I'm still on the 6gb 1333mhz ram that came with the laptop, I'll be upgrading to 8gb of 1866mhz ram soon, will that effect the scores?

Results are out, 19876 with the 6990m. Mind you, I havent overclocked it yet.

Although, on the results it said it was a 6970.. I ordered the 6990, how can I check which I have?

download gpuz and check your gpu shaders and clock. 6990m has 1120 shaders and 715mhz gpu clock.

It only came out a few weeks ago so there aren't drivers that fully recognize the model name yet (your system actually recognizes it as a 6900M series, some benchmarks assume 6970 because that was the only 6900M series card). It functions just fine though.

The next major AMD/ATI driver release may fix the naming.

just finished ordering mine i hope it gets here fast as i hate to wait for shiney stuff :p

with the 6990 still being fairly newish i reckon performance will increase a fair bit with newer drivers.

cant wait on bf3 either but what makes things even better is i will be gettin to play it on me m17x :D

Newer drivers will give you a boost. You should see at least 20K in '06 once you get settled in. Nice rig. :)

6gb is plenty. Don't waste your hard earned money on 1866mhz memory unless you plan to overclock. The 2820qm only supports up to 1600mhz FSB so this will kill any (noticeable) advantage on using 1866mhz memory.

The SSD was a good choice. I get my M17x R2 tomorrow with a 256gb SSD included. Normally buying SSD from Dell is a major rip off but I received 20% off which brings it closer to normal prices :). Still, I overpaid since it is an older outdated alienware, but I got exactly the parts I wanted except for maybe the 5870M (got the 285GTX). But as I plan to install a 6970M at some point, it really didn't matter which card it came with it.

heh the prices dell put on the hardware is a tad more then store prices indeed, already got a ssd so puttin that in once i get the machine.

Here in holland u cant realy get any better deals lol, there was an offer of 190 euros less on their webby so took that heh saves atleast some money :p

prices on the alienware laptops have been comming down slowly the last few years now alienware is gettin competition from asus and msi and a few other custom gaming laptop building companies.

dont realy mind that tho :p cheaper shiney = best shiney :p
