I just received my brand new replacement r3 with 580m gtx. Getting ready to do some bench runs. The bios that came installed on this computer is A06 which is kind of weird seeing that A05 was never officially released. Don't know if there are any other changes besides support for new graphics cards. Also there is a difference in the chassis there is an extra small vent at the bottom that is right beside the nameplate on the bottom. So there is 3 total, the 2 big fan ones and now an extra one to keep graphics card more cooler. People with the older chassis with the 6970m that want to upgrade to newer graphics card might run into heat issues since the older chassis does not have the extra vent for cooling. Amd Radeon HD 6990m owners when you receive your computer please report if your chassis has the new vent for extra cooling please thanks!!!!
Well I just ran 1 pass through 3d mark vantage. Here is the results: Intel HD Graphics 3000 Mobile video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor,Alienware M17xR3 score: P14125 3DMarks.
Here is the second run: Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor,Alienware M17xR3 score: P14072 3DMarks.
3dmark11 results: Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor,Alienware M17xR3 score: P3161 3DMarks.
3dmark11 second run with 280.19 beta drivers.

Both of those scores have to be the GTX580m. Those are great scores. A stock 6970m does about 12000, so 14000 is excellent. An overclocked 6970 can do 14000, but yours is doing it stock so that is great. Congrats on your new laptop.
-
Oooh, new toy. Congrats
Can you test if it can max out Witcher 2 and manage to get stable 30+ FPS? -
.
-
-
3D or non?
Also, the extra fan definately isn't REQUIRED as we were all running 485's without issues for awhile -
-
-
Is Optimus included after all? I seem to recall that there was a bit of a concern as to whether the 580m had it...
-
Pics of internals and bottom panel please.
Congrats. -
pics of the 580m card please!
lets see dell's core batch & how many mlcc between mosfet circuit -
Nice now overvolt that beasts! Upload a vbios to the buys at mvktech and ask them to trick it out.
-
-
I will upload pics of the bottom panel and the 580m card later today I need to get my girlfriends camera. The one on my phone is not good at all and the pictures come out crappy. Also what is the best way to upload through imageshack or directly on this site? TIA
-
I would upload via a site, then post up here. Remember to resize them on the forums so it isn't like 7000x3000 resolution or something crazy.
-
Ok I will upload through imageshack to make it a little easier. I will post the link in the first post of this thread with the picture of the new cooling vent.
-
That is awesome. My nameplate gets so freaking hot its crazy.
< jealous. Enjoy! -
Would you mind running 3DMark 11? It's a more up-to-date benchmark, and I never really paid much attention to Vantage.
Also, could you post a shot of your temps from HWMonitor after running the benchmark? I'd be interested to see if that vent actually helps any. -
-
Hey could you use nvflash and extract the vbios from dos (not using GPU-z) I wanna take a look at it. Thanks!
-
-
can I haz ur gpu?
-
LOL, no this is my new baby. This is for me and me only.
-
Looking at the latest benchmark threads...ur 700 behind bartlett and his 6970 score. Though i'm presuming they all OC their 6970's.
You may want to look into the MSI Afterburner for basic overclock, that and make sure your drivers are the latest. -
It's about the same as a stock GTX 560 Ti, or there-abouts. Not bad for a laptop, though considering the price...
-
ill get some benchies up too when my 3d 580 finally comes

Does anyone know how to backup the installed nvidia drivers so I can have them for future use if I have to reinstall windows? I checked nvidia website and they still do not have the 580m drivers and I also check the dell website and they dont have them to download either. I also checked the dvd that came with the computer and it does not have them either. If I have to reinstall windows for any reason I would be in trouble since I would not be able to install the nvidia drivers. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks

That's very interesting, maybe get a little 50mm fan to stick it onto there.

There is no danger to dumping the bios w/ GPU-Z as far as I've known.

Alright download this:
HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool - v2.1.8 Download - EXTREME Overclocking
Plug in a USB, and use it to format. Select the option to make it bootable. Use the files here:
Windows 98 System Files Download - EXTREME Overclocking
Once you've made the bootable USB stick, download this:
Download NVFlash 5.100.0.1 for Windows | techPowerUp
Put it on the stick and reboot your system with the USB drive still plugged in. Hit F12 to bring up the boot menu, select USB storage.
Now when the dos comes up. Type:
nvflash -b backup.rom.
Wait for it to do its thing. Shut down, reboot back into windows and the new bios should be on the stick. Then upload it for me -
If you have a laptop cooler you place the fan right under the GPU. -
So strange to make that cut / 'window' there. That means Gforce cards get much hotter than ATi and they try their best to find ways to cool them down... Maybe that is one of the reason why they do not want (excuse is that the cards are not in stock) to sell the cards separately. We have to change the back cover as well! Who knows?!

Code:
Here are the instructions to add this GPU to the current NVIDIA drivers. It will work with the previous 275.50 beta driver but I highly recommend users do the same for the upcoming beta drivers that will be released this week as it will contain numerous driver fixes. 1) Download the NVIDIA 275.50 beta driver from: 2) Double-click on the driver file up until the point where the driver contents are extracted to your "C:\NVIDIA" directory. Then cancel the installer. Go into the NVIDIA folder and drill down until you come across the "Display Driver" folder. Go into this folder. 3) Search for the file "nvdm.inf" inside this folder and open with the program Notepad. Scroll down to the bottom of the page where the GPUs are listed by their device id. In between any of these lines add the following lines: Sorry to hear about your dilema. Unfortunately your laptop is so new, we do not yet officially support it in the current display drivers. We will be releasing a new driver later this morning which also unfortunately does not support your notebook. If you do the following though, you can get the driver that is coming out later today to work with your notebook. First, download the newest beta driver that will be coming out later this morning. It will be 280.19. Once downloaded, run the file to extract the file contents but don't continue after the files have unzipped. Cancel the rest. Go to your C:\NVIDIA directory and you will find the files extracted. Drill down until you find the folder "Display Driver" and look for the file "nvdm.inf". Open this file in Windows notebook. Scroll down to the bottom of the page where you will see several other GPUs listed and add the following lines somewhere in between: NVIDIA_DEV.1211.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M" NVIDIA_DEV.1211.02 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M " NVIDIA_DEV.1211.03 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M " After this has been added, save this file. Then go up/back one folder and then double-click on the file "setup.exe" file. This should launch the driver installer. Your GPU should not be detected. If you have problems with these instructions, let me know.
But Also a tiny bit under that post (one m18xSLI user got Problems):
Code:The device ID matches. It should install. Please wait until tomorrow when a new beta notebook driver will be available. I'll post a modified nvdm.inf file to override the one that is part of the new driver. The upcoming driver unfortunately does not include support for these two notebooks so but I have put in a request already for these two notebooks so the followup notebook driver should include official support. I'll update this thread tomorrow.
But another m18x User suggested:
Code:These drivers came with my m18x. I found them in c:\Dell\Drivers\ 269.03, packed with 7zip, just uploaded http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NWZDJNR7
His inf-file states:
Code:Okay, since there was no other choice I am on the driver than came with the laptop - 269.03. nvdm.inf saz NVIDIA_DEV.0DCD.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M" NVIDIA_DEV.0DD1.02 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M" NVIDIA_DEV.0DD1.03 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M " NVIDIA_DEV.0DD1.06 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M " NVIDIA_DEV.0DF4.02 = "NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M" NVIDIA_DEV.1211.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M" NVIDIA_DEV.1211.02 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M " NVIDIA_DEV.1211.03 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M " NVIDIA_DEV.1251.03 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M" NVIDIA_DEV.1251.04 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M " NVIDIA_DEV.1251.05 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M "

Ok I just created the ms dos bootable usb stick and I copied the nvflash program to it. When I rebooted my computer I seen the win 98 splash screen and I got a command prompt. I typed in nvflash -b backup.rom and I get this file cannot be used in dos mode.
Any help on this so I can get this bios dumped?
