Hi, I am being recommended from various parties to upgrade my gpu. Because I also use my laptop for Adobe Suite (Premier, Photoshop, ect) I need a gpu that isnt 100% gaming (ex. NVidia GTX).
I checked the scores and saw that the Quadro K5000m games up to par with the AMD 7970m/8970m but preforms much better in rendering. Since the K5000m costs $700 I might consider it also due to the fact I might be studying engeneering next year. But my question now is if the K5000m is compatible with the M17x R3? Or should I go with a 7970m/8970m? If I go with the K5000m would I have Optimus? Or any other form of igpu? Thanks

optimus is only compatible with the 580m/460m in the r3. You can use the manual toggle in the bios though. I don't see why the 5000m wouldn't work though. :)

    Thanks bigtonyman.

    Anybody else ever seen a M17x R3 with a K5000m?

Watch out, depending on the type of compute the AMD cards can be MUCH faster.

I also work with Adobe, and it's worth checking out whether they now have full OpenCL support and not just CUDA support. If they are then maybe its better to go with AMD. If OpenCL is still not fully supported then stick to the Quadro!

Looks like ATI cards are fully supported in Premier CC!

It seems like a good card to me due to the purposes that you have for it.

I have Adobe Premier Pro CS5.5. I can;t find a list of certified gpu's for it, only for CS6/cc. Anyone know if the k5000m was on that list? Thanks

Yeah quadro would be nice but with the price difference of the 7970M you can add an XM processor (Premiere,Autocad) and at least 16GB 1600MHz ram.

The Price differnce I saw was only $250 which wouldn't give me a xm :(
    Shouldn't I go for 1866mhz or 2133mhz ram?

Not worth the price difference and potential risk if he is doing important work on the machine.

    List of supported GPUs.

I was checking up on it and the AMD GPUs are much faster than the kepler based cards in the adobe software.

Yeah, potential risk...Kingston HyperX PnP 1600MHz (1866MHz) worked great for me, never had issues (R3).

Since I do video editing I checked out the Quardo 5100m, but at around $1,500 it was more than double a 780m so I went with the latter. But with all this OpenCL support maybe I should have went for a 8970m. Would have saved a bunch of kesh, too.
