I have the basic 1 year warranty. I want to change my ram. If Alienware sends a technician over to my house, does my computer have to be stock? I want to sell my stock cpu (eventually), ram, hdd, and Wifi card.

Should be fine, just be aware they won't cover the new parts.

If i take really good care of my laptop, is there any need to get an extended warranty? Most problems should occur in the first year right?

Yeah I keep my parts for the duration of the first year and don't get any more warranty. By then it is time for a new laptop anyway.

I have had laptop parts fail without warning after several years.

I always get a warranty that is as long as I want to keep the computer. If you ever get even a single major breakdown it will pay for it. A single major part of the laptop is going to run you $500+. It is really common to have something like a video card croak and have it burn out the motherboard as it dies. That is like a $1200 repair just for parts if you have to buy them.
