Like many here I have been trying to decide between the m14x and the m17x R3. After reading through the many opinions I have decided the m17x may be the better option for me.

I have one OCD question before I push the 'purchase' button (and it will be pushed regardless of the comments). How does the keyboard handle finger grease? I know this is a weird question. Though, I have had laptops that have shown none at all and others that have w/ a high gloss grease coat after a few months despite washing my hands before every use.

Also, thank you to all who gave opinions on the m14x and m17x - helped a ton!

I haven't notice any grease on the keyboard of my R3 whatsoever.

could just be the wearing down of the keys after a few months, instead of it being an actual grease.. you could use like clorox wipes on the keys to see. should cut through just about anything..

that comes back to the quality of the materials used for the keyboard though

Also it's not grease it's the acid from your fingers it actually eats away at the coating/keys. No way to permanently stop it unless you use gloves.

    Hey there LFSubstance,

    Welcome! :D

The Alienware notebook keyboards are pretty great. They handle finger greese pretty well. If you would like to keep your keyboard in pristine condition you could purchase some cheap keyboard skin covers off ebay. I have quite a few I use. They fit and work great.

    Cheers. :)

The grease will eventually eat through the keys and begin corroding the motherboard. With time it will ultimately render the machine useless.

True story. I have already lost 2 Alienwares to finger grease. The bright side of this has been, each time the grease finally makes its way into my motherboard and shuts my machine down permanently, it has allowed me to upgrade to the newest model.

I forsee this one lasting me at least a year.

I can notice on my WSAD keys and my spacebar it is a little bit shiny. It is not grease, is the matte of the keys wearing of becouse of use. To be expected after i while (it has happend to all the matte keyboard i have owned before)
