Are you OK with the resolution difference & a single graphics card to get 3D? If so, everything but the CPU looks like a nice upgrade from the original system.

If you're not OK with the single graphics card, you can possibly use the loss of SLI/Crossfire & loss of resolution as your reasons to push for a i7-2920XM (more comparable to your original "top of the line" CPU) with SLI/Crossfire setup in the M18x.

My apologies...that extreme was my mine.It didnt come with the system. I will update my signature immediately.

Original CPU was i7 840QM. As for the resolution is the best in this line of Alienware. They do no employ 1920x1200.

The newer tech, lighter weight , a much better touchpad and smaller dimensions are the things that motivated me to go for this. I have deliberately been using 1920x1080 for more than a month now. I am fine with it. I was using this format on studio XPS 1640 before I got the Mx R2..so I should be fine. I will miss MX R2 for obvious reasons but its not been very comfortable for me in terms of ergonomy. I frequently fine the edge of the palmrest poking into my forearm. I have to keep my hands more straight than slightly flexed when typing on R2.

    Well thats my musing....

It's ok if your fine with dropping from a dual GPU setup to a single GPU. Personally I wouldn't go for a dual-->single, but thats just me.

580m should be very good!!!!. I only have the 460m and it's not even that bad :p (But I'd like better but tech support doesn't wanna sell me the 580m...)

As for the CPU I don't know whats the fuss. They new Sandy's are VERY efficient and fast. Even the slowest (2630 QM which I have) is still blazing fast. I have never been bottlenecked ever.

580M is as powerful as both of your old video cards. However, this is not comparable as you had dual graphics cards. I would push for the M18x with dual 580's or 6990's :)

Lol!...Well I could but it certainly wouldnt suit my lifestyle or computing needs. I know most of you have gaming on the top of your mind when it comes ot dual GPU. But since apart from gaming and benches its practically of no use. I cant use it to render or encode etc when doing multimedia work involving videos and photography.

I think as you said a single 580m is way more powerful than 2 5870s put together and I can truly use its capacity for work purposes unlike an sli or crossfire setup that only useful for gaming n benches.

I dont think I could get M18x even if they wanted because its not available in Asia. I guess if at all they had given that to me, I would have 100% sold it off. For me M18x is an oversized overkill for a laptop.

If you like the smaller size and the format of the 17r3 then you are getting an outstanding replacement. You could probably push for an M18 but I would think they will reduce the specs (but maybe not).

It does sound like a single GPU is a better option for you, now as far as 580M being way better than 5870 X-Fire, that depends on what your doing. Gaming, it may be slightly ahead, but for your work, since your only utilizing a single GPU anyway, than yea 580M would be much better than a single 5870. Though 5870 is still a pretty capable card. I've seen no gaming issues with my 5870 x-fire setup. That said, I'm still upgrading to 6990 SLI just because I like benching new hardware :p Enjoy your new system. Should be pretty good for your line of work.

    NOOOOOOOOOOO

    Go for M18x.

You can sell it if you dont like and purchase differnet laptop.

you will end up better IMO...

Oh well my original system had Blu-Ray burner, so I played hard ball with them and ensured one way or the other they gave me that hardware.

After much haggling they delivered that component to me. Its now with me. As for the system that is being delivered, it comes with BD-rom.

Lol! you are one hell of a bencher...if possible you might even fit a pair of micro nuclear reactors as your R2's powerplant...Thanks for the optimism. I hope it finally is a curtain call for all my problems thus far. I dont want to call Dell or discuss replacements for a long time to come if I can help it. I totally agree..5870s are still relevant and very capable and havent had an issue with gaming. I played crysis 2 all at max without a single issue.

As I mentioned earlier, M18x is not available in Asia Pacific. So its not feasible. The only true loss for me is RGBLED, but there seems to be very positive review on the 120Hz panel and seems it can be calibrated well for photographic works etc.

I really hope it is noticeable lighter then R2 since its down by 1.19kg. Keeping my finger crossed...
