You should monitor your temps while gaming.

Temps shouldn't have anything to do with it. Ive tested this with an old desktop of mine by disconnecting the video card fan and gaming until the GPU became so hot, the computer shut off. Only saw, at most, a 1-2 fps drop over that entire period.

If its laggy, then goes back to normal on and off, it sounds like a memory/caching issue. This is normal. You may be trying to go from one zone in the game to another which requires data to be sent to video card memory for processing. Usually there is a brief lag here, then it goes back to full speed again. If its bad enough to where you're dying... well... could be a hard disk issue, maybe theres a bad sector on it, or the game data is corrupt. If thats the case, the drive will try and re-read until it gets good data. Until that point, the video card is left with no food to eat, hence the FPS interruptions.

    Thats my theory anyway. :D

Run GPU-Z and save a log while you play then upload them.

Has this problem always existed with the game? Or did it start acting this way recently?

Do other games have the same problem?

I would probably update video drivers and then blast your vents with a can of compressed air. A friend of mine had similar problems. After he dusted the vents the stuttering stopped.
