    Ave,

I'm in an intermediate apartment right now where I don't have any space for a desk; as a result I'm needing to use my couch & bed for most of my work.

I'm looking for a lapdesk for my Alienware M17x-r2 which enough width to support my optical mouse. I've found a lot of lapdesk's, online & even at my local Fry's at Renton (Which by the way carries Alienware machines now); but most of them are not for 17" laptops - and the ones which are don't have room to put a mouse alongside.

Is there anyone here who uses a lapdesk for their M17x-r2 with room for mouse? I'd love to get some recommendations.

    Thanks!!

Well using a M17x without a desk in the first place is too problematic :D Especially when the touchpad has that kind of performance.

Most of us consider M17x as a desktop to begin with ;)

^^ Congrats on the beast, Silly!
How do you like the R2 now?

I was actually using my R1 and R2 on a lap a lot, to say, - the mobility is possible, lol

I use mine on my lap too :p , but the laptop cooler NZXT Cryo LX, is painful on the legs. So i use a stiff cushion under it (one that won't impede airflow to the cooler's fans) Works like a charm with my mouse on the stiff pad sent to me via AW. No changes in temps at all.
Most of the time it is used on a desk but on occasion it's in my lap. So, it can be done but I would be extra extra careful of any lapdesk without adequate airflow.

To the males using the laptop on your lap - make sure you have a good laptop cooler if you want to have children in the near future :)

Do what I do with my current laptop (still waiting on my m17x to ship). Buy a track ball, I use the logitech Trackman, set it on the palm rest areas of the laptop where ever you are comfortable with it and enjoy your laptop on your lap! Since it requires no real movement the trackball needs much less surface area and is easier on your wrists anyway. And much better than any touch pad I've ever used on a laptop.

I'm a female I forgot about that aspect of it. I will leave all jokes alone.
Seriously though, the Belkin fan is in the center and M17X ventilation is more towards the rear. What we need is a really nice aluminum cooler with fans that can be repositioned as needed, and it includes a covered foam cushion for the part that actually sits on your lap. Best material I can think of is the coated foam we use in sparring gear in karate. Non-slip and won't deform a lot when under pressure.
Anyway just thought I'd let you know about the Belkin, it looks exactly like the XBrand laptop cooler that shipped with my Area51 m17X and I had the same problem with it.

That one is mine, no total picture, but it have enough space for my machine, i use the big mouse pad from Alienware and a big mouse from Cyber Snipa, im pretty glad with this, the only thing is than i think you cant get the same brand, at least not as simple, this company seems to dont export anything ., . . .

My current R2 which is bought directly from Dell works like a charm. The display is top-notch and that please a skeptical guy (on display) like me. Tho I notice the grainy white too :D

The one under my sig is the one that orijin was selling in Marketplace. I'm in process of returning mine and the orijin's one will be shipped tomorrow hopefully. I honestly don't know what to do with 2x256GB SSD. That's just... too much :D

Hey that's a brilliant idea. I never thought of that

I use a tray that looks identical to this. I picked up mine at Walmart for around $30 about 2 years ago for the Inspiron E1705 I used to have, but it works great for the M17x also. Since then it was seen on clearance at bed bath & beyond for as low as $9.99.

The reason I say that mine looks identical to that & is not exactly that one is because mine had an incandescent light, where the one in that link has an LED light, plus mine is pretty solid & some reviews of the one in the link complain about it being weak.

Here is the NBR thread from the last discussion about trays for the M17x. My detailed description of that tray was post 23.

    Good luck!

    Guys,

Thanks for all the posts! I'm seriously considering the Logitech LapDesk N700. ( Logitech - Speaker Lapdesk N700 - 939-000287). I could care less about the speakers but there is one specification which is ultimately suiting me ... it's 21" width. The M17x-r2 is exactly 16" in width. That leaves me a total of 4" ~ 5" to place my Razer Orochi bluetooth mouse & use it. I would prefer more, but I think it's doable ... especially considering that I'm just not finding that Width in any other lapdesk.

Some of the other suggestions here were good too; but ultimately, the N700 is seeming like the best option. I might actually stop at my local best buy today to see if they have one.

    Still open to suggestions though.

    Thanks!
