    Sup all,

Before I start my post I just want to say thanks for all the good info you guys have been posting up here. It helped me make my decision toward my m17x.

I've been using the m17x as a desktop replacement and so far I've had no issues. Got the Vertex 3 in there (In Slot 0, been monitoring it, its staying at 6 GB/s). I also picked up a Targus HD3 chill mat with it. I have been wondering if the fan will be more useful sucking the air from the laptop or if I flipped the fans and had it blow air toward it.

I ended up flipping it because I figured the laptop already sucks air from below and I didn't want it taking that air away. I usually run it full blast.

I have been testing it out with the BF3 beta and RAGE and I haven't seen a different in temperatures at all. Even with it off my GPU runs at about 68 degrees and my CPU at 66. With it on the numbers are the same.

So I'm wondering if I should flip it back to normal and have the fans suck the air away?

Maybe this cooler just isn't good enough or maybe this really only makes a difference if you OC your GPU / CPU.

    Thanks.

    I've got Notepal U3.
3 fans which you can set wherever you want (for example below GPU, CPU, HDD), quite quiet. It's an aluminum cooler.

in my experience, i tend to stay away from notebook coolers with many fans because it gets loud. A good cooler does make a difference. But is it the fan or is it from being lifted up slightly?

If you want to see a drop in temps, just keep your laptop lifted up half an inch. You can experiment and see what i'm talking about

I got the same one, It does slightly lower your temps but it's pretty loud even when I have headphones on i can slightly ear it, i mostly keep it off and only use it as a stand to elevate the m17x off my desk so the fans can suck as much air from the bottom as possible.

I did another field test with it on BF3 and actually found that my GPU / CPU were getting hotter with the fan blowing air up at the laptop.

I think I'll reverse the fans back go normal (suck mode) and see what happens.

Another thing I'm considering is removing the bottom casing of the m17x when I have it in "desktop mode".

dude, just keep the laptop lifted up...forget that targus fan.

if you want a really cheap solution, look at these things for $1

I'm not suggesting that you go out and buy it, but all you really need to do is have the laptop elevated slightly to lower temps.

Yea you know what I'm talking more long term if I OC the 6990 I hear it starts to heat up pretty quickly. Stock fans are fine otherwise.

Raise the bottom of the laptop up like SlickDude said. You'll see bigger temperature drops from that than anything else, if we're talking about circulating ambient air. The thicker caps from the 1 liter bottles are awesome for elevating the back of the laptop.

If it's just the lowered temps you want then as everyone else says you can just raise your laptop slightly. If you want a more ergonomic position, ports, etc then you can look for a laptop cooler.

I have several laptop coolers, I purchased the CF 19 for the alienware for USB 3 ports and cooling. Since the m17x r3 is primarliy used with an external monitor it doesn't matter that it requires a power adapter and it can keep other devices plugged into the usb powered/recharging.

As always it's preference, usage and needs that should help you make the best decision for you.

I think I like my Targus cooler so much because it keeps it off my lap, and the R3 spends 90% of its playing time on my lap. It just moves everywhere with my R3 lol, plus I don't have temp issues with it.

FWIW, I have gamed with the back of the R3 propped up 3/4" and never had a problem. If you don't game/use the laptop on your lap, just prop the back up and save 40+ bucks :)

if you're thinking long term and OC'ing, then you need to repaste your GPU with some decent thermal paste. Repasting will be way more temp lowering than a laptop cooler.

just bought the NZXT cryo lx...it reduces the temps a bit better than the book idea since it circulates air...but the book idea is the best for something temporary. but if you want it to look nice since you have a couple thousand dollar machine ;)

    What these guys say.

Best solution is an old textbook and a repasting if you're hardcore.
