With the M17xr3 currently "work in progress", I've been wondering about how hot it gets? My old samsung r710, plucky beast that it was, DID get hot and now I have no hair on my left thigh because that's where the fan kicked heat out.

What's it like for the M17xr3? Looking at it, it looks like it shunts the heat away from you rather than strip off layers of skin, but does anyone have direct experience?

A friend of mine suggests alienware machines are also informally known as "potato bakers" - men will probably get the reference - because they run so hot!

Which leads me to think about investing in a laptop cooler, assuming it's worth it/needed and if so, which one?

I like this coolermaster U3 that ibought from amazon. It comes with 3 fans that you can move around where you want allowing you to cool the hot spots.

Just to add, the nameplate on the m17x r3 gets scorching hot.

Zalman NC-2000 is perfect and fits the M17x like a glove.

Also as far as cooling goes, this thing is amazing. Probably the best cooling you can find in any type of laptop.

Currently looking at the CM SF-19 Strike Force and the Zalman NC-3000U. But the M17x has amazing air flow, most people agree just lifting with a book will do the trick.

I bought the Targus, it fits and works great with the R3. Paid 40 bucks for it.

Which Targus is that? By the way, do people actually care about extra USB ports?

    Targus Cooler

No, I really wasn't really looking for extra USB ports. That may change someday, but currently I have no use for more then four.

Prop the back end up with a couple of bottle caps or something. That will give you the largest drops in temperature.
