So after a few problems dealing with Dell, my new M17XR2 arrived today, on the day they (finally) told me it would be coming.

As an Alienware virgin I wasn't sure what to expect, its hard to tell what you'll be getting from pictures on the web and all the forum browsing in the world can't adequately describe what comes out of that black box.

What a fantastic machine. The build quality is fantastic, and the RGBLED display is just beautiful. I haven't even got as far as unleashing the Crossfire 5870's on any games yet but needless to say I won't be getting much sleep tonight!

So if there's anyone out there debating whether to spend the extra money on an Alienware instead of a cheaper system, just go with the Alienware. It looks and feels better than anything I've seen from any other manufacturer, performance wise (so far) it seems to be up there with the very best and whilst it is expensive, you get a lot for your money.

And finally... thanks to this forum for persuading me to part with my cash!

aussieblue - You luck . I ordered mine on Tuesday. How long after you ordered did it turn up and what sort of problems did you have dealing with Dell?

Its worth it if you can get a deal under $2500 anything over that you are overpaying and unless you have a nice surplus of extra cash probably not worth it.

I think this all depends on where you live and the standard of living. $2500 USD might not get you a very nice system overseas where there is much more markup compared to USA. The alienware build quality and warranty support is the main factor for me choosing alienware over other boutique shops. It is not just the hardware or the bottom line price but the support that comes with it

What do you think of the noise level when gaming vs. just browsing?

Ordered on September 6th, arrived 14th October. The first order I placed was cancelled by Dell about Sep 15th for no reason - they didn't even tell me it had been/was being cancelled. Their customer support was terrible and took until the 23rd for them to admit it was their fault and reorder the system.

Its loud when gaming - I'll try the cooling mod and see how that goes - but to be honest given whats inside it I'd be worried if it wasn't! I only really noticed it when the fans kicked in when I started games up. Once I was busy playing, the in-game noise drowned out the fans to an extent.

Okay. So forgetting about their first mistake it was still 4 weeks after they re-ordered it. That is still more that the 11 - 15 working days they advertise on the Oz website. Did they indicate why it was late?

Absolutely. I hardly noticed the fans while on the net, playing back music or copying files across from my old laptop. I did run the WEI and it got noisy testing the CPU and gpu's but I can live with the noise when I'm playing graphics heavy games.

Yup same here chiefs. No fan noise unless I'm running a AV scan where it sometimes boosts the fan speed up occasionally. Other times are only when I'm gaming and thats it.

Silent always otherwise. ALthough my hdds seem to be making some sort of hissing sound every few minutes. Like they are breathing or something. Hmmmmsss..............

    CHeers. :)
