My 17x has stopped shutting down and after the closing screen hangs with fan and lights on but blank screen and no disc activity. I gather this can be due to a number of possible issues, either hardware or software related? I have booted into safe mode and then closed down and the computer shuts down as normal so can I assume there is a software glitch? I am also finding that when I try and play a video it starts for a few seconds but then the computer shuts down. I have just changed my HD5870 video card??

You need to update the Vbios for your 5870m('s) and this will resolve the issue. You can find the VBIOs on Dell's Drivers website page by using your service tag to get the right drivers and Bioses for your system.

Thanks so much Harryboiyeye. I did as you suggested and updated the Vbios from the Dell Support site. All is well, the computer now shuts down as normal and the video playback is back correctly.

You do need a strong constitution dealing with these actions though if you are not an expert. I downloaded the Vbios update for the M17x and set up an USB boot drive. Upon booting the screen warns gloomily "Updating your Vbios can cause serious damage to your computer". Then it asks cheerily "Do you want to continue?"!!!! I shut my eyes and hit the 'Yes' key.......magic. Thanks
