Been waiting for a few months now for a good deal on an Alienware m17x. I only have $1300, so Dell Outlet is my best option so far.

    Is the R3 the latest?

Also, I see that Dell outlet seems to only have the Nvidia 460m listed on any refurbished alienwares. Is this always the case? The HD and ram I can just upgrade later, and cheaper.

Can I upgrade the card later also?

The card can be upgraded. If your LCD is the 120Hz version, you're pretty much stuck with Nvidia GPU's.

    R3 is the latest.

There are some refurbished ones that are with the AMD 6870M. Some have the Nvidia 460.

    The card is upgradeable later.

yup the r-3 is the latest in the m17x line however it changed dramatically from the R2. It lost the RGB screen and dual cards. The R3 is the replacement for the m15x, while the m18x replaced the m17x r-2. ;)

460m isn't a bad card, its still rated in the high end of the spectrum. All components such as the RAM, Hard Drives, Processor, and Video Card can be upgraded aftermarket, however a newer more powerful video card will be expensive down the road.

You can find 560 and even 580 just have to work at it. They pop up every now and then. I got a 560 with 120 Hz screen and the glasses I had to call tech support as they weren't in the box. If you go for 3D the 3D bundle means glasses but you have to push for them. They do not like to include them since they cost almost 100 bucks. Just keep looking and you will get what you want. Got my m18x on the outlet for 2200.00 spec's in sig and my m17x r3 has i7 2670 with 560 3D for 1425.00 with 15% coupon. Good luck! ;)

Thanks everyone for the help. I keep trying everyday, and with that 15% coupon code (expired already!) I thought that was going to be my chance. Guess not this time. I came close last night, but I don't want the HD+ screen, and I'm not sure they will upgrade that on a refurbished model.

Would love a 3D version, but I think that will have to wait till next year.

Always ready to break down and just get an XPS, but for now I'm still holding out for an Alienware.

Edit: I now have $1400, so close! Just need enough for taxes and I'm set.

I have $1200 in credit from dell, and $200 cash. Otherwise I would jump on this. :)

I believe you can call Dell and inquire even for an outlet system ;)
