Are you looking for any system? Or specifically an m17x? Or specifically the r3 or r2?

You should get 4 years advance or standard. It will be worth every cent to not have to worry about the thing breaking down. I went for 4 years standard on my m17x R2. I did not find the price for advanced worth it over the standard, as I do not drink etc infront of the computer.

Also make sure you buy it new. I personally would never trust a pre owned product. Not even from the outlet.

Do not upgrade ram and HDD through Dell. Upgrade the ram and HDD yourself to get more value for your money. I made a mistake to upgrade my HDD to 500GB through Dell. What I received was a crappy seagate 500GB slim. It was a slow boot disc, and it took about 45-60 seconds before my pc was booted up. I got fed up and slammed in a 500GB Seagate Momentus XT in the primary HDD slot and made it to my boot disc. The 500GB HDD i received from Dell is now my storage disc.

Upgrading to the momentus xt made wonders to my boot time. Now it takes only 20-25 sec to boot.

You could get a refurb m17x r3 with 2820qm and 6970m for under 2k, maybe even with bluray and 6300 wireless card. Then you could just add on warranty, and keep it under 2.4k

I just ordered the R3 3d with 3year advanced warranty and 2720 processor for 2455. That included a free xbox (ordered on my sons university email). I went 3dsouth because I wanted the 120hzR3 screen. The 6ohz system with an ati9760 prices out a little more.

If you want the warranty, you need to get it now. It will be 2-3 times more expensive to extend it after the purchase (even if your warranty has not run out).

lets not forget that purchasing with visa or amex boosts warranty by another year. so if you stay with 1 year warranty but buy it with a visa or amex card, you really have 2 years of warranty.

    I am curious...

    1) Why did you get the GTX460m and not the 6970m?
    2) Why did you get the GTX460m, but not the 120hz screen for 3D?

To me it makes no sense not to get the 6970 unless you are doing 3D.

Interesting. My question though does this apply to visa cards as well because if it does then that is freaking sweet. :D

i hope it does...does anyone have an answer?

    1) 6970m...well i had a spending limit, and it would of gone over with the 6970m, not to mention i perfer nvidia over AMD, im hoping for 485m support to upgrade.

    2) i am using this laptop for college as well, the 3D, has alot lower battery life than the non-3D, due to optimus (or manual switching with AMD).
