Since there aren't any retail Dell outlets around here (UAE), I'm planning on ordering my M17x R3 directly from the US and have it delivered to a local UPS office, which in turn will ship it to me.

However, I'm really worried about having defects/bugs. You see, I can't go shipping it back to the US every time I experience technical difficulties. It would be a waste of time and money if I were to be stuck in a back and forth shipping process just to get my bugs ironed out.

So, should I just cross my fingers and go for it? Maybe I should get an extended warranty plan while I'm at it?

If you've bought an M17x overseas or have experienced something comparable, then by all means do tell me your thoughts.

    Thanks! :)

Dell has an international warranty so once you buy your laptop you can transfer the warranty to your country and service it there.
I've been ordering laptops from Dell like that for quite some time and never had a problem with servicing them in other countries.

correct me if I'm wrong but that only works if the country is included in the service contract, not all are, UAE might be not sure

I'd say that if you have Dell in your country your warranty will be honored.
obviously if you dont, there's no one to honor that warranty.
you need to find out whether there is Dell in the country you live in AND they have the same laptops for sale over there you should be fine.
I serviced my laptop that was purchases in US I three different countries already and never had a problem.
the most they can ask you is to transfer your warranty to that country.

After knowing that my warranty can be transferred I went on Dell's website and talked to an agent who had no idea if UAE had any Dell technical support office.

So, I was just trying to get more info. You can't look for something if you don't know where to begin. :(

Sometimes stores sell things with warranty even if its technical support agency isn't available locally. I've experienced this first hand. I waited over 4 months for my old ViewSonic monitor to be fixed (it had dead pixels :( ). All they did was contact its technical support office overseas and send it to them. The process should have taken a lot less time, but you get the point.

i currently spend 90% of my time in a country that at this moment does not offer warranty support, look up the Dell website for contact Dell and search through the list of phone numbers, if it's not there it's unlikely

and if you talked with a Dell agent who couldn't give you an answer I'd have insisted they get off thier and go and find out lol, although I would caution you with anything they tell you as information changes drastically from one rep to another lol

I am from UAE and bought the outlet M17XR2. I transferred the warranty from USA to UAE and they were fine with it.

I had some problems with the power supply and they took care of it (Dell UAE) but they said that you better transfer the warranty if you plan on staying for more than 6 months. Just on a side note, the dell support main office in in Egypt.

If you have any further questions, feel free to PM me.

    Great!

Where are they located exactly? and how good is their technical support?

Have you ever had any other problems with your M17x?

They have a toll free number. You call that and speak to them regarding whatever problems you have. The dealer if I am not mistaken is Emirates computers. But if you are buying your PC from states, who cares lol.

Technical support seems good. They sent me the wrong power adapter and overnighted the correct one then. The wrong one was send in the same box which had return postage as well.

I have had no other problems as of yet regarding the machine.

Is the R3 on sale in the UAE? If it is not, then I dont know what level of support you can get regarding it!

    I see.

So, you got technical support even though your warranty wasn't transferred right?

    How did you transfer it?

    I really appreciate your help!

Use the form that mfractal provided.

Wherever you buy the alienware laptop from, make sure it comes with at least 1 year Next Business day(NBD) warranty. You can extend the warranty before it expires. Alienware laptops are one of the few laptops that come with international warranty out of the box. Other laptops may have so but Alienware/Dell has some pretty wide coverage.

How are you planning on buying the laptop?

Thanks mate, you're really helpful.

Through their US website (for more details, see my first post).

However, it seems that M18x is due this month. So, I'll wait and see how it turns out.

    Thanks again. :)

    Damn! I missed it. =p

Looks like the 485 will be added later, not that I really care since the 6970 provides the same, if not a little better, performance as the 485.

I'm not a fan of 3D, but the only reason I'd want the 485 is the 120hz screen, which has better contrast/brightness than the 60hz one (as demonstrated by someone on YouTube who had them both).

Thanks for the heads up though!

If you really want it then by all means, go for it! I bought the m17x r3 from the US website and had it shipped to my ShipitAPO address, then they turned around and shipped it to my location in Guam and it took about a month(you will probably get better luck than me though). Google "Shipit APO" and you can make a free account and order anything you want online that doesn't ship to your country, just remember to expect about a 5-7 day turnaround. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and my laptop has very minor issues. It's definitely worth considering.
