    Hi people,

I own an Alienware M17x R3, I recently purchased a Nvidia GTX 680M 2GB GPU off Ebay. The card came with an X Bracket but no Heatsink, the card itself is brand new.

Does anyone out there know which heat sinks are compatible or if I could get the right heatsink for this card from anywhere? (I'm based in Australia)

My M17x R3 currently has a Nvidia 460M installed, which came with the build when I bought the Laptop if that helps?

Also, are there any good threads on getting the GTX 680M to work well on the M17x R3?

Thank you heaps to anyone who can spare a little time to help a fellow Laptop user out.

    Cheers from Aus! :)

Thanks heaps dude! I have purchased the 660M Heatsink you suggested.

Is there much I need to know about what thermal pads to use etc? any good guides you might know of?

I've never replaced a laptop graphics card before, completely new territory.

    Thanks man! :)

Use the image above for pad placement.

If your looking for new pads, contact "upgradeyourlaptop" on Ebay and ask for an upgrade kit only. They will send you pads, pre cut to the correct size and thermal paste.

    For an in depth guide:

Read here (its a 7970m guide but the principle is the same):

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...-mobility-7970-m17x-r3-illustrated-guide.html

If you have the 120hz panel, skip straight to the GPU install. If you dont, follow the instructions to disable the Intergrated graphics. Once you are at the driver installation stage, read here:

Note: If you have Windows 7, skip straight to the 3rd step, Windows 8, Step 2.

    Hi Joe85,

I have ordered the Thermal pads cut to size + Thermal paste through the mob you suggested "upgradeyourlaptop" (from ebay).

Now I just have to wait for all the pieces of the puzzle to arrive and I can piece the puzzle together using all the guide material you have provided.

Thank you heaps mate! you have been amazingly helpful!

    Cheers :)

Try EUROCOM. The have heat sink and X-bracket for the Clevo D900F. I'm not certain if the same fits your rig. Just a thought.

    Cheers.

Just to confirm, the R4 only has 1 heat sink model, no matter which card you get the same heat sink is fitted so the 660m heat sink should be fine. Since you have the xbracket and pads etc. you should be good to go. The ati cards have a different xbracket I think.

True, all nVidia R4 cards use the same part number.

I'm coming from an M17X R2 with a single ATI Mobility 5870M card. I would like to upgrade to the GTX 680M 2GB from this listing. Judging by the pics is the xbracket already installed and would I be able to use the same heatsink I was using from my 5870M card on the to GTX 680M? There is a video on youtube where the guy used the same heatsink from his 5870M card to the GTX 580M. I am wondering if the same would apply to the GTX 680M. Any answers would help.
