I've had marginal success updating drivers for my m17x r3 in the past (which was not repeatable unfortunately). I tried searching the forums for ways that were being used to update the AMD drivers for the 6990m, but they were either not clear or I caught them out of context.

I know that the issue lies with the integrated graphics for sandy bridge and the 6990m itself, but I would really appreciate it if someone would post a sure-fire works every time method to update the drivers for the 17x r3 with 6990m gpu. I appreciate any help, thanks.

First install original Dell provided AMD display driver. After that install the new driver on top of the old driver. If you got bsod, when system restart press F8 and disable driver signature verification.Try to reinstall again.

I recommend the following order Dell AMD driver -> AMD 12.11 WHQL driver -> latest 13.x Driver.

My personal 'never failed me' method:

    - uninstall current drivers
    - use Driver sweeper to clean everything
    - reboot to safe mode and run driver sweeper again to remove remaining gpu driver related stuff
    - reboot to normal mode
    - install new drivers

While in safemode there is an optional step where you can have software clean your registry of gpu driver related entries. If you update drivers constantly like some benchmarkers do, from new to old to beta etc just to test, then it creates a new entry in your registry every install, which can cause issues. I personally don't do this step as I just update whenever there is a new driver, but thats it.

If switchable graphics aren't important to you then the best method is to disable to intel graphics in the bios (set the gpu option to PEG). Then just uninstall, clean, and install directly from amd.

Thanks for replies, and syntax53 I don't seem to have that option in my bios. I did install the dell drivers and installed the 13.1 drivers WHQL (twice) and that seemed to work.

Is there a bios update that I'm missing to disable the intel graphics? I believe i have A08

You need an A08 drivers unlocked to do that...... but I suggest you update it into A12 Unlocked.... it works fine in my system so far.... you can find the link in this forum......

Based on my experience, every user have their own way for update their driver, because some method isn't working for some user, even it's on the same or identical system. So you need to try it what people here suggested and find your way on your own....

for me, since released 12.11 above, I just installing on top over my previous driver and it's working fine, but some people don't....

I did clean install official Dell drivers last week, then Leshcat's Beta 5 over them and Beta 7 at the end. No issues so far.

I'd actually recommend not using driver sweeper as it has ruined my GPU registry values several times and prevented switchable graphics from working. If you do an uninstall from within the windows uninstaller everything should go smooth. ;)

I have to disagree with this.
Although this is a bit outdated but, when i was using the 4870m x2, the only way i could get a stable (modded) driver installation is when i would use the driver sweeper after a deinstall.

Deinstall by itself just deletes the common files and folders but not the full registry entries and this IS what you want at a clean install stage.
Side note: if you deinstall with driver sweeper first, you gonna have a big problem :), so this is something you want to pay attention too.

I'll go ahead and download the leshcat beta's and store them as my fall back method if trying to update from 13.1 doesn't work. I can say this much though, I had been stuck on like 12.4 drivers for quite some time and updating to 13.1 made a huge difference with games like Skyrim.

Hmm I just bought a 6990M for the system I'm fixing so this sounds like it might be pretty interesting.

Would it work if you install Leshcat's 13.3 Beta 3

    Leshcat

and ATI Catalyst 13.3 Beta 3

AMD Catalyst 13.3 BETA 3 Download

    ???

PD. When you install them, are you using the Intel integrated, the ATI card or it doesn't matter which card are using during the install?

I'll never buy an ATI card again.
I would've paid the extra cash for a Nvidia card if I knew they had absolutly worthless driver support.

No offence but you have admitted that you don't really know a lot about what your doing in a previous post and it is quite possible that you have created a problem trying to do an update and it may have gone south somewhere. There are others that are seeing success updating their drivers and I don't seem to see a lot of posts from others saying they are having the same issues as yourself. Follow the steps listed above and do a clean install. The problem isn't necessarily Dell or AMD......I can get bluescreens on my 7970 if I mess up the driver installs to, the difference is I know how to fix it. Follow the steps others have posted and it will probably fix your problem. If you just keep dumping drivers over drivers your going to run into problems.

Most other laptop manufacturer's are not any better at releasing vendor specific drivers, they rely on the hardware manufacturer as well.

Nvidia has had their problems too....
