I have asked this a while back and technology keeps changing so I am looking for updated information.

I have an Alienware M17xR4...... I7, 32gb ram. AMD Radeon HD 7970M, and Killer wireless N 3x3 mimo.

    • I want to do a video card upgrade and stick with AMD, what are my options?
    • I want to do a wireless AC or AD upgrade and maintain the 3x3 mimo.... I don't want to loose an antenna to 2x2. What are my options?

I have had a number of bad experiences with Nvida and have no intention of going with Nvida.

In all honesty why stick with AMD? They have NOTHING new in terms of mobile GPU's. I don't know much about the new R9 300 series but pretty much everything past the 7970m was a rebadge of that card with very minor performance improvements. AMD has really fallen off as a mobile GPU offering over the last few years. It is funny that you won't even consider Nvidia as the 7970m's were dying left right and centre. There is NO shortage of threads in this forum of dead 7970m's , we just don't see them much any more as the R4's are becoming less common.

Maybe I am not lucky.... My first experience with Nvidia was with their GPU 10 years ago where they lied about the problem with calculations that ended up in them lieing to their customers for about 18 months until the class action lawsuit went through and they started replacing the cards for free with new ones.

Since then I have had 2 other newer Nivida cards ail on me. Never once has any ATI/AMD card physically failed or had calculation issues. In my personal experience Nvidia likes to blow allot of smoke and hide the problems with their hardware.

The only AMD GPU option you have that is a noticeable upgrade is the R9 m295x, and it hasn't been tested in the m17xR4.

no issues with the 980m here and there are a few people with the 970m and they haven't seen many major issues that couldn't be fixed... so i think it's time to go to the green team!
