Hello, i am hoping to buy an Alienware by the end of November late December and was wondering if i should wait, now i am not too concerned about the new Sandy Bridge CPU's coming out as i am with the new ATI cards and the 400 series, i don't know if i should go a head and get the dual 5870m's or should wait until the 470? (i doubt 480 due to the W but i could be wrong).
Also, another main concern about buying a dual-GPU laptop is the noise, i don't mind if it's loud during gaming but when i am just surfing the web would i hear the GPU fans running? I heard that the 5870m's don't use powerplay, or is it just the Clevo one's that have this "problem"? That is one of the main reasons why i am switching from Clevo/Sager to Alienware. Not to mention the build quality of the W860CU is horrible.
Thanks for any help,
-
Dell 5870's do support powerplay.

Welcome.
When your not gaming or doing anything intensive the M17x is very quiet. Almost silent so you all good there chiefs. Also the 5870s in the M17x do use powerplay. Everything is in working order.
The RGB LED screen is also amazing to look at and use whilst surfing the net or doing other tasks. Gaming of course is brilliant too lol
Cheers. -
I think people will be surprised but you might see some AMD 6870 by Christmas in the M17X. If that is the case then I would say yes it's worth the wait. -
... but seriously, how much faster is the 6870 over the 5870?

I don't think anything has been published yet, but I am pretty sure the benchmarks posted around google are most likely fakes.

The thing is that the architecture looks to be really good so in theory it would be possible that the mobile 6870 version is much faster than the 5870M. Even a 15 to 20% gain would make it king... -
I have 4870's and they are plenty fast for me.....5870's are fast still, although i am in no need as my system is way fast enough as is......remember when new stuff is issued, new problems follow. So if you realy do want to wait, i would wait a month or two after release. I mean who want sto be anyones guinea pig

Great thanks for the help, I may wait until i see some benchmarks. I heard the performance difference between the 4870M and 5870M is only about 10%-15% - which isn't that much - so hopefully the difference between the 5870m and 6870m isn't huge either. Although i hope the 6870M isn't like the 480M which i heard that runs way too hot and requires a lot of W.
Dell is having a free Dual-GPU upgrade, Xfire 5870M with 740QM for only $2199 (not sure how long it last), if it is for the whole monh then i will wait until i hear about the new ATI GPU which should be soon. Thank god Alienware decided to use powerplay -

Now the problem i see is that when ordering on the Canadian Dell website the price of the Alienware M17x is $3000, where as the same setup runs about $2199 (yeah i know currency exchange but it would only be $2222.21), I wonder if i can order it from the US website or possibly talk to a sales rep either from Canada or US, I don't mind waiting for shipping if i save myself $700.

Well on the Canadian site with a 720QM is costs $2,949.00, if i could order it with a i5 i can just swap in my 840QM.
Even with the 720QM it costs $2,373.90 U.S. I guess the free GPU upgrade is only for the U.S.
