Hey guys, my M17x R2 has recently developed an annoying problem here. After dissembling and cleaning up my heat sinks my laptop's fan has annoyingly been really loud more than usual. However when i check my temps on HWMoniter, my temp for all cores goes as low as 48/42/46/42 degree celcius while GPU-Z reports my gpu at 42 degree Celcius. What troubles me here is that Sapphire Trixx reports my temp at an average of 65-75++ degree celcius whereas the air blowing behind from my vents are cold! Although there really arent any heat issues going on with my laptop now, the unusually high temperature reported from Sapphire Trixx plus the loud fan noise can be really bothering!

Take note: All temperatures are taken while either being idle or with Google Chrome on

I use HWInfo32 for my R2 and I think most users would agree it gives an accurate temp readout. You may want to try using it.

The R2 GPU fans do develop an annoying rattling sound which may be what you are hearing. A replacement from Dell will fix this issue. I had to have my right side fan replaced and I know many other users have as well.

When gaming, your fans may run very high and your temps should be in the mid 70s to low 80s range. Anything over that would concern me. Idle temps should be much lower in the mid 40s. Normal usage can get into the low 60s for me. Just depends on what I am doing. I also have CF 6990s so my temps will be slightly higher than the 5870s.

Actually 5870's may run hotter due to faster clock speeds, but use HWinfo, that may show if the GPU's are being utilized. Fans should start when under a slight load.

What are your specs? My R2's CPU fan kick in if anything is starting to run, and gaming all fans are on full blast...

fixed the issue. Seems that i forgot to tighten the screws on my gpu's x bracket which then causes the heat to be trapped there. Now my temperatures at idle are averaging about 44-47 :D

Anyways Ghost_AWP, i've noticed that you are running a 6990m Crossfire on your M17x R2. Does your 820qm bottlenecks your card and did you do anything to your cards (undervolt/flash vbios)? Most importantly did you do any mod to your PSU or are you using the standard 240w ones that comes with every R2?

Off topic i know :D but i am literally 1 step away from installing my 6990m into my R2

    And as for Tsunade, I'm running my R2 on i7 740qm/ 8gb ddr3 1333mhz ram/ 5870m Crossfire/ 7400rpm 640gb Harddisk but i highly doubt its relevant now as i've already solved my silly problem :p

For gaming, 720M will be fine, although it may bottleneck the games that are CPU intensive. When it comes to gaming, you'll see a much greater benefit going with 6990s over an XM cpu. As long as you undervolt the GPUs a bit (not hard at all) you will be fine with a 240W adaptor. Heck I'm running undervolted cards and a 940XM and have no issues.

Glad you got the heat issues sorted out.

That my friend is a different story. I haven't updated my sig yet, but I actually do have CF 6990s in my system again as of last night. My replacement card finally came. As far as power consumption goes, I'm pushing the limit of the stock PSU. Played BF3 last night and was drawing anywhere from 220 to 250 watts using a watt meter to test. Occasionally notice some minor throttling which quickly corrects it self. My cards are not undervolted, although I may do so soon.

My own experience has burnt through about 4 different cards in trying to upgrade to 6970s and then 6990s. The performance increase is huge, but I've had a lot of problems with the upgrade process. Can't say I would recommend it to the faint of heart. But if you know what you are doing and you get some good cards, it is a nice upgrade.

Check out this thread for more info:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...-6990-your-m17x-r2-single-gpu-crossfirex.html

Be warned, there is a lot of reading that should be done before you try this. The thread is large, but if you read it you will have a better understanding of what problems may lie ahead.

Looking at my previous 3Dmark11 scores, my 5870s ran at about the same temps as the 6990s with the second card being slightly higher than the first hitting 88 on the shader. I attributed this to stock paste and pads though. I would assume that if I used ICD on my 5870s with Fujipoly pads I may have evened the gap in temps. Since I have 2 new heatsinks, maybe I will try.

One thing that may help speed the reading.

Go into User CP>Edit options and in the Thread Display Options you can increase the number of post per page. This can help and is especially useful for large threads, though I think very few people know this is available, and thus don't use it.

Im only running a single 6990m with 740 qm and would probably upgrade it into a 920xm and another 6990m soon when i saved up enough money for it. As of now would my current combo of 740 qm and single 6990m experience any throttling?

No. I was running a 6990 single for the past few months with an 820 and had no issues. Performance isn't that bad either. Was getting 35-50 FPS in BF3 multiplayer.
