My m17x now seems to make a croaking noise at the startup.. The loud fans don't bother me, but my laptop sounding like it is dying is rather unnerving.. Something also makes a hell of a racket whenever the laptop is not perfectly flat.. Kinda like a grinding noise? What are the possible problems/solutions for this..
    Thanks,

    Will

sounds like a bad fan. there are 3, the one kind of in the center for the cpu, and the ones on the left and right top corners for the graphics cards if u have a sli/xfire setup. u can probably put your ear up to it and figure out which one it is or remove the bottom cover and elevate the laptop when u turn it on.

my friend gave me his logitech laptop stand as he is going overseas.

My M17x R1 sat on it for two days and began to make the croaking noises you've been mentioning. At the beginning I was puzzled too but found out it was my GTX260 fan that's unbalanced..... had to remove the stand as I couldn't stand the cluttering noise....

    sighz what a shame.

call dell and have them send a tech out to replace the fan.

if u are out of warranty all u need is the fan, it's not attached to the graphics card and there's a disasembly guide on youtube.

When you run the laptop on an uneven surface you are applying pressure to the GPU and this is why the fan runs louder. This laptop due to weight and design needs to be on a flat surface with weight distribted equally. I noticed this problem when I ran the laptop on top of a wicker basket. As soon as the laptop was flat again the fans were quiet.

Azzelex the cooler was probably smaller than the base and this has moved the GPU fan out of alignment. Perhaps the noise will go away after playing on flat surface for a few days. Just put the cooler behind the laptop, it will still help draw air away from the back of the unit.

I don't really have a perfectly flat surface, as my brother isn't very good at making tables, and I unfortunatley have a wobbly, leany table.. Everything the table wobbles the fans go *MEEHHHHGG* Can I tighten the fans or something to make this go away?
