My trusty M17 R1 works perfectly on AC Power and Windows 8.1. But while on battery power the screen blacks/blanks out when I attempt to use full screen video (Netflix, blu-ray , etc) or use a game (3D high end). The battery works fine while normal browsing and using regular apps. Here are some facts and issues:
1. Power Options
I've tried all the Power Options that change the screen dimness. Also fooled around for hours with the Advanced Power Options and numerous "Battery" option settings - but nothing works
2. System & Battery Condition
The battery itself should be good, as it charges normally and fully. My system and battery have minimal use, as I recently returned from overseas travel after 2 years, while my system sat around unused for my entire 2 year voyage. Its virtually new as I only used it a few months before traveling - while my awesome but buggy System waited eagerly for my return home. The battery can last over 1.5 hours while just internet surfing, so it should be sufficient to power my system and doesn't seem to need replacing even though it lay dormant for 2 years.
3. Drivers - I updated to latest BIOS flash from Dell Support. I'm also using the latest NVIDIA driver for my NVIDIA 880m GPU.
4. My System Specs
Alienware 17 R1 i7 4910MQ / NVIDIA GTX880M (1080P 120Hz Screen) / 75GB SSD + 1TB HDD / 16GB DDR3
5. Other attempted Fixes
I uninstalled the NVIDIA driver and used only the Intel GPU and driver as a test. This solved the problem with the screen blanking on HD video play while on battery. But this is not a permanent fix as I can not obviously 3D game nor use the maximum capability of my system
6. Origin of Black screen on Battery Power
My system was working completely fine on battery power using any video application or 3D game up until just a day ago. I was using it for well over a week when I returned home from my overseas trip. However, because my System doesen't dim using the FUNCTION keys, I used a 3rd party app called "Dimmer" to reduce the screen brightness. After using it for a day my battery power issue started. I obviously stopped using the program and uninstalled but I'm unsure why it still doesn't work properly. Since using this app I have reinstalled the NVIDIA driver numerous times and even did a few System Restores.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I normally don't use my battery to game or watch HD video, but on some occasions I'd like to use for a short periods. It simply bothers me that my expensive little Alien is not working as intended.
