I might be able to get a good deal on a 30" 2560x1600 LCD. The monitor only has DVI input, so I believe I'd have to run mini-DP to DVI. My question is:
What's the cheapest adapter that would make this work? (I had heard there's a passive adapter that's around 20 bucks that would do this, but I'm not sure where/what one to buy)

Next would I be able to run my native 1920x1200 on the laptop and extend the desktop to the 2560x1600? Or by enabling mini-DP that would take over as the primary display only?

    Thanks,
    Aaron

    *EDIT*

Or, what is the max output I can do for multiple external monitors? i.e. can I run 3 external monitors using VGA, HDMI and miniDP...or only miniDP and DVI or VGA? or some combination?

    Thanks again!

If you are looking at getting a cheap Korean monitor, I would seriously recommend getting a slightly more expensive one that has a DP input. You'll have less issues in the long run. As to price, you'd need an active miniDP to DVI converter, which run about $60 for one that supports anything past 1080p. As a monitor with a displayport input is only about a $100 premium, I don't see much reason not to go with the higher end display.

You will need an active adapter which is not that cheap.
