    Hi guys,

I believe my M17X R1 is getting long in the tooth. It has a Quad Core Q9100, HD5870M and 4GB RAM along with my SSDs.

Id like to do a little project to restore my old R1 and was wondering if its possible by any shot to upgrade the laptop with an R3 or R4 motherboard to refresh its lifespan?

I've got an i5 2450M CPU sitting around that I can plug into the board while I save up for an Extreme i7.

not looking to buy new laptops - its either upgrade this or sell and upgrade my desktop instead as I have too many other laptops.

    Cheers!

    bugger.. thats no good.

I just read the M17X R2 Max upgrade thread and got some good knowledge from that - apparently an R2 fully Upgraded can beat R3s (and maybe R4s?) anyday with dual GPUs. thinking I might go down this way.

I would save the money and get a new laptop/refurb... Doing the upgrades will cost $1000-1500 at least and its not worth it... Also a massive pain to do..

    +1

    You will need :

    M17x r2 mobo + daughter board : 300 €
    I7 920xm : 200 €
    dual 7970m : 600 €
    330w psu : 150 €
    crossfire bridge , fan , heatsink : 70 €
    cpu heatsink for r2 : don't know

Maybe some screen problem ... For this amout of money you can get an m18x with 7970m crossfire .

There are some good offers in the DELL outlet every now and then. You could take a look at those.
