I just got some OCZ RAM for my brother's M17X R1. We installed it tonight and the PC keeps crashing. We put back the factory RAM and the PC is fine.

I got him that RAM because I have it in my M17X and it works fine. Is there such a thing as bad RAM?

    Yes.
And, unfortunately, OCZ is beginning the process of terminating all RAM operations to focus on SSD technology. I've read that they've begun sending out letters that they will not honor their warranty (maybe only when supply is gone, I'm not sure - I skimmed the articles).

I suggest you RMA the RAM ASAP ( lol )

Also, did you get the correct ram?
Is there more than 1 new DIMM (stick of ram)?
If so, try 1 old + 1 new - then alternate if boot fail.

Just re-read..sounds like it's booting but crashing - so it must be the correct ram. Run memtest

I got exactly the same one I got for my R2 and it works perfectly for me. I guess it's just bad luck. I'll return it.

RAM, like all computer (and electronic) components, can come bad from the factory.

Another issue is mixing brands or speeds of RAM. They may have different timings or voltages and may not work together.

Another issue I've seen is the RAM's speed/timings/voltages not autodetected properly by BIOS. The only way to fix this is to get the timings spec sheet off your RAM manufacturers website and manually input the settings into BIOS. I can't recall ever seeing this happen in laptops, but this used to happen a LOT in desktops when DDR-3 was still a new technology.

If you want to test your RAM to see if its bad, run Memtest. Download the latest version, burn it to a CD, and boot off that CD. You'll get a blue screen with a bunch of numbers on it. It'll automatically start running. Wait for it to perform at least 1 full pass. If you see any red bars pop up on the screen, then your RAM either has bad sectors or the timings are off in BIOS.

Yup, uncommon but not rare. Had several faulty brand new sticks right out of the packaging over the years.

As the others said, get it replaced asap.

Did you get 1333 for your R2 and the same for the R1? - does the R1 support speeds of greater than 1066 or does that not make a difference? - will the system only use 1066 of 1333 if thats what ram is put in it? or would it not work at all? - was the only thing I could think of other than bad sticks......might be totally irrelevant mind you!

You can use any speed you want. The PC will just use the fastest clock compatible with it in your example 1066.

I guess I just got bad RAM. That sucks...

yes the R1 does support 1333Mhz Ram freq. (it's not that old and problematic as you hear)
and even if you put the Hyper X ram which can run up to 1600Mhz they will run @1333mhz in the R1 and R2.

I didnt say the R1 WAS old and problematic did i? - as i dont own one, I didnt know if the max speed was 1066 or 1333 or even if putting higher clocked memory woud cause a difference......it was merely a thought. Obviously putting in 1333 IF it only supported 1066 would be a waste of money on more expensive ram.....

Received 8gb of OCZ 1333 last week for my R2 and have no problems. I doubt theyve been dumping faulty ram on purpose, my guess is a bad batch.
