Hey there, dudes.
I've been offered a replacement unit for the followng R1 specification.
I am being offered the following:
I am concerned mostly about the warranty-factor. Shouldn't the remaining period on my old warranty carry over?
Secondly, the CPU. I know that the 620M is quite good. However, could I negotiate for something a bit more practical by way of a Quad Core configuration? Here in UK, the 620m is approximately a hundred GBP expensive incomparison to a 740QM. But still, would a 740QM do better?

The CPU you aren't going to have much luck with arguing/asking for an upgrade. They look at Mhz when spec'ing out the replacement.
As for the warranty, yes - it should be added. Take the longer of the two. If you have more than 1 yr under the current warranty, be sure to discuss. -

Cheers for that!
I have over 2.5 years left on my warranty. -

Firstly, sad to see another R1 leaving us hopefully it's for the better
And as for the warrenty it's out of the question to limit your warrenty like that, you should get at least the current remainder. keep us updated with your experience would like to know how it turns out!
Best of luck -

Thanks for that, Katalin.
I already fired back an e-mail telling them that the warranty ordeal must be sorted. I told them that they must give me my original warranty package, if not add that package to the 1 year that's being offered seeing as I lost a good 10 months trying to get this throttling issue resolved.

Also, I am not leaving the R1 group; I still have my primary R1 unit that is listed in my signature. This replacement was issued for my secondary unit that had been through considerable service calls with no results, obviously. I still plan on keeping the main R1 in hopes that they introduce some kind of fix to our listed problems. Of course, if this truly does become a hopeless case then I will have to press for a replacement most likely. -
Out of interest how long did it take for details of replacement to come through from when they agreed a swap?
The tech guys agreed a replacement over a week ago and I am still waiting to see what they will offer.

I just got a replacement after a similar situation my R1 kept freezing and after several hardware replacements not doing anything they sent me a R2.
You are going to be really happy with the R2, the R1 is great and I would have been happy to keep it if it worked but those 5870's in cossfire rule!!
Compared to my buddys desktop i7's with GTX 480's and 570's the R2 is no slouch since games are capped at 60 fps anyway you will be getting similar performance to a very high end gaming pc.
All the best with the replacement! -

Shaco Unica,
It did take a little while because there were some 7 service calls with little results. The technical support representative was helpful, and actually offered a replacement himself after I refused to send my laptop 'to the depot'. It took him about a week to get his supervisor from escalantions to send me the specifications, which I received rather late today.
My advice: once they say 'yes', you are set. It might take a bit longer for them to get their act together, but you must then wait for the actual specification to be e-mailed to you as that'll come from another party and not the Technical Support Department.
Wordtothawise,
I believe I will be happy with the replacement. I am a bit worried about ATi's driver issues, but I also plan on overcoming these issues with the right attitude.
However, as an ode to this R1, I have to be very honest here; this machine is an awesome beast of a laptop that I could fully utilise thanks to external software such as Unclewebb's Throttlestop. Hell, had it not been for this software, I would've been annoying the hell out of the support team months ago. A real shame that they can't get some of these simple issues acknowledged as what they really are, let alone sorted through the proper means.
The 280m GTX SLi, with the correct setup and drivers, is no slouch seeing as I got great performance in most games that people boast with their 5870s. Really, it came down to an issue of 75 FPS vs. 85 FPS, which is really pointless. When it comes to real, resource chewing games, I also managed to close the gap with slight modifications of the configurations (I can run Crysis on practically Very High). So to be honest, I am glad I still have my other R1 unit. I only hope Dell does right by us R1 owners by taking initiative on this matter. -
Kade,
I had a replacement done also recently I just got my specs finished. Now granted mine was a r2 to a r2 replacment. But one thing that I did discuss with the rep that helped me set up my replacement, was the amount of cache on the processor. One could argue that with it going down from 6mb to 4mb that it is technically a downgrade. Even though you know that the i7 would still out perform your current processor. That might help you get the 740qm. My situation is different but just something you might want to explore. -
Kade, since this is a replacement, please continue here:
