Hi guys, cleaning out the fans on my R1 isn't helping with the temps any more so I'm going to do a full service (i.e. new thermal paste / pads). Just wondering if someone who's done it in the past can let me know what I need. Note, I don't use the 9400M at all, just SLI 280M.

I already have some AS5, but if there is something better, please let me know. Also, I saw in another thread that the ram (GPU ram???) uses a 0.5mm pad, is that correct? And what is a good thermal pad to use.

    Cheers in advance :)

Update: guessing the GPU cores are probably exposed, which means I'll probably need something non-conductive like AS Ceramique instead or IC Diamond?

Here are the thermal pad sizes for the GTX 280M in the M17x

    For the 9400M you'll need a 20mm x 20mm - 1mm thickness.

Hi Katalin, thanks for the reply. So I'm guessing the way the cooling works on the 280Ms it doesn't support thermal grease at all? Are there any brands of pad you'd suggest?

Yes it does, sorry for not mentioning.
You'll need thermal paste on the GPU die.

I used many different brands (seriously it makes little to no difference) but the easiest to acquire for me is MX-4 at a local shop.
Leave it next to a light bulb or in a cup of hot water while you disassemle so it will be easier to apply.
Pu a small amount only and choose a method to apply it. i personally spread it in a thin layer.

As for thermal pads, the Fujipoly were the ones i found and use though i wasn't able to find them in 4mm thickness. I forgot the name of the other ones, found them at a local shop too.

You can stack two pieces of 2mm on top of each other.
Here's a place you can look:

I thought about that however im just worried about the thermal interferance between the two causing a "thermal blanket" effect. I guess if i heat them up with a heatgun a bit first that may help. I'll let you know how it goes as soon as I put my desktop back together. Stupid water cooling maintenance. Thanks for the help on both ends!
