A dispatch was created 2 weeks ago to replace twin 5870 and the rgb lcd.
I contacted dell and they said "the part that needs to be installed on the computer is in backlog".
The computer is in the desk lifeless.
Anyone here also having a backlog and waiting?
I am not really liking it.

They are offering maxed R3 but I don't think that will compensate specially with the GPU.

The 6970 is offering comparative GPU power to the dual GPU's. THe 460m is 14-15k stock, and the 6970 is 19-20k stock on 3dmark 06. I would take the upgrade.... well I did take the upgrade, they are replacing my R1 system with a maxed R3 as well. I am going to 460m route and installing a new GTX 3d compatible card like the 485m or newer Nvidia gpu in the future.

Despite my obvious bias for the m17x r3, I have to agree with you. The WLED 1080p is supposed to be a beautiful screen, and especially with 120hz. However, from side-by-side reports, it is close, but not the same as an RGBLED, which is what you paid for.

6970m is a good option, maybe 5-10% off, with no CF issues/driver problems. It might not add up to the 5870CF, but its not too far off.

The processor is a bump especially at stock, but overclocking is out. So if you planned on anything, a first gen core-i extreme cpu would be better.

Sata III support is a boost, so is HDMI out/in.

However, then the whole question of build quality comes in, and most people prefer the old sturdiness of the aluminum.

It's not a bad option, but if you want what you paid for, you'll have to wait.

Caveat emptor... Glad I didn't take the plunge. Looks like you and I both made some assumptions. The build quality just aint what it used to be. It's very unfortunate. LINK

just makes me angry how much they take advantage of the buyer... I love the build quality of my M17x R1... it was a superb machine while it worked. And I honestly was impressed with how the new Alienware was as a company... but it seems that recently consumerism has won out....

When I talked to a sales person, way back in Jan he told me the r3 was made of anodized aluminum just like the r2. Of course I can chalk that up to another ill informed Dell salesperson.
