So I tried dowloading an ATI driver for my M17x(ATI 5870), but something went totally wrong, so I decided to use Alienrespawn to fix everything up.

However after my laptop was restored to factory settings it has been running very slow! I takes ages to boot up and shutdown. And it is running slower in general.
And the Intel Rapid Store Technology seems to be initializing something for really long, could this be slowing my computer?

    Whats wrong!?

    Thanks in advance

something went wrong with the respawn?
    you're in stealth mode?
check the BIOS for turbo being disabled, etc....

if you can get into windows, revert to the previous driver version....

Is say that stealth mode would be the culprit....and as for Intel RST icon taking ages to load up on the taskbar, this is quite common....mine takes around 1.5mins to load up to "green tick" status.....

Try enabling/disabling stealth mode using the touch icon until you get the message that "FULL POWER MODE" is active....then restart you lappy and see how it goes...

All my drivers are factory set... and its not stealth mode...

Whenever I boot up it takes a lot of time to get through the starting windows screen and then a black screen and then after logging in it gets stuck on the WELCOME screen for a couple minutes...

PLEASE READ MY PREVIOUS REPLY ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Is there any chance that alien respawn could have damaged the system in anyway...though it went through just fine

I would personally just do a clean install and if the issue persists. After installing each driver/software restart and see when the issue begins.

reinstall fresh. something is boogered up for sure but it's most likely not hardware.

isn't there built-in hardware diags or a bootable cd-rom download of them from dell's website? that would test the HW. or you caould call dell and let them talk you through it.

or maybe try system restore to a point in time PRIOR to when you altered things.....if you dont want to reinstall windows.

sometimes my system boots slowly, sometimes not.

but in general (inside operations) its not slow at all, maybe you need to update all the drivers after the re-spawn?

i know the factory respawn is a whole image including registry, the only thing that is left behind is the flashings (VBIOS / BIOS / other things that i dont know about).

If you run the actual OS CD as opposed to using the respawn partition then you're going to lose your "Alien" look. However, I find that not installing all the extras that are on that factory image improved the running of my operating system.

If you dont install the command center etc back on then your system is going to use whatever light scheme was last applied until you put your command center application back on. If you dont care about playing with your rainbow colors etc like I do then that's just one less startup application your system doesn't have to worry about.

If you've ever used Ghost or any other imaging suite you know that when the image gets laid down on your HDD it has to get applied just right. Your respawn partition is just that, a copy of the image that was applied at the factory. I agree with EntityX's suggestion, reinstall, load drivers etc and chances are your problem will be gone. (that is unless your hdd is going out on ya)

One last thought, if you've flashed your video card firmware make sure you get the newest 5870 drivers installed after installing your OS. I'm running the latest beta drivers and I see no issues with it.

Actually, there is no reason why you should lose the "Alien look" at all because of a clean windows install. As long as you dont delete the recovery partition, you can reinstall AlienRespawn and also change the logon screen using a log-on changing program.

Also, another user came up with a great install procedure for drivers during a fresh install - (hats off to Voice for doing this) -he went to alot of effort to test it out so a few threads below make for some very interesting reading if your planning a clean OS install:

Hope that helps anyone thinking of a wipe/re-install of their Operating System. :D
