Hey guys, dont you think our R2 screen is too bright and less contrast. It is annoying when I edit my photos.

To solve this I used my friends SPYDER II to calibrate my screen colour settings. Now the colour is much much better. Hopefully this can help all R2 users who has Ultrasharp RGB LED 1920*1200 screen. ;)

Not too sure if it gives right colour settings to non Ultrasharp RGB LED and NON-5870 Xfire users.

    Steps:

    1, download 2 apps:
    ProfileChooser:
    http://cv.datacolor.eu/downloadfiles/ProfileChooser.exe
    ColorVisionStartup_1.2_Setup
    http://cv.datacolor.eu/downloadfiles/ColorVisionStartup_1.2_Setup.exe

    2, download "M17X-R2-UltrasharpRGB_LED_profile.zip" from attachment,

3, put "ProfileChooser.exe" and "M17X-R2.icm" (unzipped from "M17X-R2-UltrasharpRGB_LED_profile.zip") in the same folder.

    4, install "ColorVisionStartup_1.2_Setup.exe"

5, run "ProfileChooser.exe", and select "all monitor profiles", then you will see ""M17X-R2", highlight it.

6, Run newly installed "ColorVisionStartup", it should automatically loaded the profile.

7, Enjoy the differences~! the profile will be applied automatically at system startup :D

mmm if i run profile chooser (following your instruction) i get this error:

    AddAllProfilesToList (IsColorProfileTagPresent-1)
    [C:\Windows\system32\spool\drivers\color\CalibratedDisplayProfile-3.icc]

    Error 50 (CMSSupportEx.cpp 64)

any hint? am i missing something?

Edit: Solved, i had to manually install the profile on the above folder (the one shown in the error i was getting) and now it works fine..

    repped, it look wonderfull!!!!!

To REALLY calibrate this screen you want to use a Spyder3 as it has wide gamut capability.

I know we have discussed all this before in other threads
    BOOM

I still stand by my last post in that thread (page 9).

Spyder3 with coloreyes display pro = ALMOST perfect color (I do a lot of photo editing and am a bit picky).

I even bought a new 8540W elitebook with the dreamcolor2 display to help manage some of my work. (I will compare how they stack against each other once it arrives in ~2 weeks)

Sure, as long as the program I use is compatable with the one you listed, it should all work.
I will check it out tonight since the dell tech just got done rebuilding my laptop (motherboard replacement and slave card replacement) so once everything is up and going again, I will build a fresh profile and post it up

Tried installing the M17x-R2 profile as described, but on my machine it made the colours much more red, and i got flickering in Mass Effect (FPS game). Dunno what went wrong, removed the program as described and everything is fine again.

OK, here is a profile I made with my spyder3 as promised.
I do not know if it will work using a different loader (I use coloreyes display pro) but for those that want to try..... follow the link HERE

** disclamer... as not all screens are the same I cannot guarantee this will be the "best" for yours or even work.
Give it a go and let me know.
If people like it then I may make some more calibration profiles with different settings (ie... max luminance, absolute black etc..)

debaucher, I have the same setup, and agree this is the way to go.

What settings do you use? 1.8 gamma and 6500K? or do you maximize whitepoint? What are your preferred settings for getting accurate colors in photos?

    rsgeiger,

Basically I have been trying a variety and these are the settings that give me 'accurate' color representation (accurate based off of the prints I have sent off to be printed) are:
    ICC2 profile with 16bit LUT
    White point target is D65
Luminance Target is set at Max (I also get good results with 120cd/m2)
---- if Luminance Target is set to max I will often lower the screen brightness by one Fn+F5 when working on photos but leave at max when playing games etc..
I do a custom monitor white balance
Gamma Target at L (or 2.2 but I find L to give good results)
Black point target at Relative with Luminance set to minimum

Now, my judge of color accuracy is based on comparing prints I have sent off to be printed and then holding them up (once printed) next to my monitor in room with "natural/white light" bulbs.

I know this is not a "perfect" setup but is typical of most people's environment so as long as they match, I feel things are as good as they can be without me spending a fortune to make a true studio.

    Hope this helps.

I am also always up for suggestions to help me improve, so offer them if you have them.

I will compare screens and color output once my 8540W with Dreamcolor2 display shows up.
I am curious how different/similar/true the color will be between these 2 displays (Alienware RGB LED/DreamColor2)

Necrotopsy, copy the file manually as described in #6, that worked for me. However the color on my screen went towards the red, and i got flickering in games, so I removed the colorprofile again...

Thanks debaucher, I'll try those settings and see if it helps. I always left gamma at 1.8 due to other people's recommendations, but if you found a way to get accuracy at 2.2 then I'm all for it.

I remember, there were 2 kinds of LED for R2, ultra sharp and non-ultra sharp, make sure you are using the ultrasharp LED. :)

    Cheers mate.

I tried, but I could not found this profile at ProfileChooser. Are you running other version of this kind of software?

The software I use is Coloreyes Display Pro so I do not know if the profile it puts out is compatible with other software.
(thus the reason for the disclaimer in my post :D )

I do know I can move the profile between machines running the same software without issue, just never tried with different software.

I love the RGB LED screen, but lately I do see what everyone is talking about with the brightness and the slight red tint...I guess after having it for 5 months you start to notice these things. I am definitely going to try this when I get off work today. Is there really that big a differece. I play Dawn of War II, Starcraft II, CoD and WoW and they all look incredible, so will I really see something drastic? Not sure what to expect lol.

Be aware, if you are running on latest 11.2 driver set, you may experience flickering by doing this. Is not the OP fault, it's the driver. If you experience this, go in CCC and re-enable AMD driver control over desktop colors, put everything at default an do your color tweak through My built in display tab. This should solve the flickering.

LoL, yes I do have the 11.2 drivers. So, the color tweaking would be the same tweak from the profile, its just doing it manually now instead of through the profile? Sounds easy enough, I am just curious as to what the quality difference will be since I love how it looks now.

Give it a try, it wont break anything for sure. Actually i liked the solution of the OP quite a bit. But my preference goes towards the performance of 11.2, and i can still tweak my colors through CCC>My built in Display tab. :)
