Can anyone help with this? When plugged into it, it doesn't recognize the A/C, 150 delta or 180w Dell. The battery is dead, so there isn't much I can do except tear it down

Those aren't Alienware specific power adapters are they? The R2 has issues recognising anything other than the proper 240W adapter due to the id chip in it. Mine also had issues with the A/C port losing connection when moved - soldering a new one on sorted that issue.

The 150W came with the M17X R2, and it is a true Dell adapter, same for the 180W. I might have to get a new 240W one just in case, or even resolder the DC jack, which sucks

Is it hard to resolder DC jack? Would a 240w Flextronics adapter work with it(single pin ofc)?

Just happened or you haven't used it for a long time? my 240W happened the same also. i got it to establish hand shake again by leaving it plugged in and ON for 3 days straight. The PSU gradually improved and it can be recognized by my laptop reliably. but the same PSU is giving me other issues like not able to supply 240W power to the laptop with a 940XM and a single 8970M. if i overclock any of those two components, the PSU will shut down during gaming and i had to switch it off for a minute then switch it back on otherwise it will not power up. i think the PSU is dying. im getting another 240W PSU to test.

My affairs are still a little up in the air right now. I should mention that it's my friends machine, but I do all of his IT work for him. It hasn't been used for a really long time, and I just dissembled it to do a repaste. The laptop is a lower powered version (720QM and 5870m) so it should be fine with stock 150w. I am going over to his house tomorrow, and I'll probably borrow it to test

then it's pretty much the same issue as what i was having. i havent used it for a long time, 2 years at least, then took it out to use and found out the laptop no longer detects the 240W PSU with the beeping AC not recognized error during bootup. just leave it ON all the time for several days and it might sort itself out. probably the identification IC needs warming up.

it does not matter. just ensure u plug the PSU to the laptop, turn on the power switch so u have the blue LED ring on, that's it. leave it there for several days. u can check from time to time to see if the "handshake" is established.
