The problem I am having is that black colors are showing up with green lines in them.

The problem started a couple days ago when i powered up the comp and after the windows splash i got red and green colored display. I boot into safe mode and everything came up as normal but when I reboot it still had the same problem. I tapped the back of the display and everything came back up to normal.

Today when I went to boot up I got the red green screen again. I also noticed some lines on the windows splash screen. And when I tried to boot up into safe mode the screen was pretty lined as well. So i decided to tear it down and check the video card and display cables. After a bit of fiddling I finally got it to boot up and give me a mostly normal display. However black colors have green lines through them and my backround (Standard windows) has some weird texturing. So I thought it might be the video card but when I plug my TV in through the HDMI our everything looks normal.

So at this point I am thinking it might be the display. I see I can get one on ebay for pretty cheap but wanted to see what the experts thought. If I do buy a new display can I upgrade from the standard display to the hi res version by just buying that display?

    Thanks for any help.

From what you said it definitely sounds like a faulty screen, no issues on an external display pretty much confirmed that - also the "wacking the monitor fix" :D.

You can get the best screen available for the M17X R2, the RGB LED 1200p, from here for $115 USD: Dell Alienware M17x R2 WUXGA LED LCD Screen Complete Top LTN170CT08 J2CY8 9PHFF | eBay

At this point, I highly recommend you get this screen and not anything of lesser quality; I have recently bought one too for an upgrade on my M17X R1.

You have a bad LCD, and yes you can just buy the RGBLED WUXGA unit and swap it in.

It does seem like a bad LCD. If you can't get parts online try calling 1-800-WWW-DELL. They may be able to help with that part.
