M17X R3 GT 425m will it work? What PSU do I get to run the GTX 780m

I have a leftover GT 425m. Looking at Nvidia's website says it does support the 3D screen.

Will it work with my Alienware? It seems to fit in the slot perfectly. My GTX 580m died and I'm looking to use the 425m till I save enough money for a GTX 780m.

Also, what power supply should I get for the 780m? I heard the 240w one might not work.

240W will be cutting it close if you're overclocking or using a large combined load. It should still work pretty decently though.
I wouldn't bet money on the 3D screen support. Most cards support it, but machines tend to be configured around using specific cards, and I doubt there were any m17x-r3 machines shipped out with 425M GPU's and 3D screen combo (and if it's not in the bios, it won't enable 3D).

I don't really plan on overclocking too much. I'd be fine without overclocking really (Even though I kinda want to :S).

I'm fairly certain my board is the 3D version. Nvidia does state the the 425m supports Nvidia Stereoscopic 3D Vision which seems quite odd as it is quite a weak card.

And, yeah. I'm pretty sure no M17x's or any Alienware for that matter shipped with a GT 425m. I pulled this card out of my 5935g and the card originated from an HP Touchsmart all in one. It does have a ROM chip.

3D probably will not work properly as the 425m is not officially supported by alienware. If it fits in the slot, I would power it on and see if its detected in the bios. If it is then you're golden and just need to install Nvidia drivers. :)

The 420m won't be recognised by the bios for 3d and so likely won't run.

Would a blind BIOS flash mod solve the problem? Like an SBIOS integration or something?

No, you would need to hack the bios recognition some how. Prema did not have much luck so it's unlikely to be easy.

I don't think that'll work. Usually cards that weren't sold with the 3D machine aren't able to get it to work.
