Hello everybody.
I come here once again looking for your expertise in order to help me fix an ongoing issue.
Latelly I have been suffering from sudden laptop shutdowns and noticed that the center bottom of the laptop was really hot (burning).
So I ran HWINFO64 to check on the temperatures and I noticed that the Intel PCH has an idle temperature of 60 degrees and zhen playing some games or watching some videos it goes over 98.
The highest I have seen is 99, shortly after it shuts down.
I have read that if you pud a copper shim or a thermal pad on top of itm then the temperature gets better.
Is that correct?
If so, is there any guide/video on how to access the PCH ?
As always, your help is very appreciated.
Kind regards<

Hey , well to be honest i have mainly alienware 18 systems and the odd 17 ranger , and i have never heard of such an issue , to be honest it sounds more like a cpu problem , if its running around 60 at idle check task manager and see whats running , check the fans are spinning up and don't use hwinfo for fan cooling unless u know what u are doing otherwise the gpu fan wont run ,if the cpu is cooking it will overheat other components of the motherboard which will make it unstable, heat is what kills electronics so u need to address this asap , so firstly i would check fan operations , if all ok check they are not blocked up with dust and clean if require ie vents , i would remove the heatsink from the cpu check the vents are clean in the heatsink and repaste using something like IC diamond just clean all the area carefully remove any old paste i use alcohol myself as it evaporates , re paste with a pea size blob similar to a cigarette diameter just a ruff idea as a comparison in the middle of the die and leave 10 mins before refitting the heatsink and torque down evenly, they are numbered but do not over tighten , and try again , would personally do the gpu also , to be honest most overheating issues are related to cpu especially if you are using optimus and if you are check what gpu each game is using ie hd intel or your ati / nvidia through control panel and change accordingly , apart from that cant really help you ..cheers

Sorry about that. LOL! I should've just +1'd your post. So, to sum up... +1 to murphey1965's suggestion. Seems like that could be the situation. -

Hello murphey1965
thanks for the indeep explanation...
I have check the cup and gpu temperatures and they only reach 50 when iddle and 70 when running World of Warcraft (only game I run)
I did a clean up of the gpu and cpu heatsinks and vents (no blocking bunnies or blocks), alro repasted the cpu and gpu.
I jused IC diamond as I have always done.
as I type now the PCH temp is 73 degrees with only word, firefox and hwinfo running.
So is there anything that could help cooling the PCH or should I start considering replacing the affected component or motherboard ?
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards.Attached Files:

Well it seems a weird one Hosuke i just installed hwinfo64 on my system i have here an 17 ranger and temps are around 49.5 to 50 on idle ...the PCH can range from 50 -105 depending on motherboard configuration according to intel , just out of interest are u overclocking , and secondly are you using a laptop cooler as they can make a big difference , i have done some research and a few people seem to suffer with this issue but how long has this been going on ie was it normal before or has it allways been these temps ? , the reason i ask is that the fans only really support the cpu and gpu so the rest doesnt get the same kind of cooling hence why u need a laptop cooler and on high end lappys its not a accessory but a necessity , if you already have a good laptop cooler then i stumped really , maybe there is a heatsink there which poss has dropped off , could be a multitude of things , sorry cant be anymore help ..cheers

Hello again murphey1965,
thanks for the reply.
No I have not yet overclocked since I did not want to over stress the system.
I only started using the hwinfo program when I noticed that the base of the laptop was getting real hot (a couple of months ago) but before I never felt it that warm.
Searching on this forum I have found the following thread...

Do you believe that it could be worth to try and apply the thermal pad on top of the PCH ?
Kind regards< -
To be honest , unless it was fitted with one why should it need , there must be another issue causing it , but if it has fallen of then hopefully will sort your issue , but a thermal pad only transfer heat not disperse it , you will need a stick on copper heatsink if there is room or re apply the one that has fallen off , the only way to check is you need to strip it down and see ..only way ....

one last thing how

My internet stopped halfway through hahaha , what i was saying is that how do you know its hotter unless it is sitting on your lap ? if it is then maybe that was the start of your issue causing this problem in the first place , i told you laptop coolers are required on these system or any other high performance laptops , because if you are just using your lap , then if there is a heatsink of sorts it probably fell off due to excessive heat and melted the glue holding it in place , if that's the case , re fit it but u will need a stick on pad or a heat transferring epoxy maybe liquid metal or something like that , and then buy a Laptop cooler ...job done .....cheers
