Hi i am about to recieve my m17x R3 with a ATI 6970. i Plan to install an intel 510 120gb ssd and do a clean install of windows. However, i would like to install the latest version of catalyst drivers. Would this still work with the hybrid graphics features? (swtiching between intergrated and discreet graphics) And how would i go about setting up the video drivers correctly?

    Thanks!!

I think you're supposed to just install the video drivers that Dell provides us. Grab it from the support site. Install that, and you're good to go (I think it also includes our Intel drivers as well).

Install the dell driver then install the newer driver on top of that.

So install the dell drivers first, then install the latest AMD drivers without uninstalling the dell drivers? That sounds rather quaint, wouldn't that cause the drivers to conflict upon each other?

It sounds like a good solution to me, plus Inap (who suggested it) and Dookie are both experienced M17r3 owners, so they should know what they are talking about.

My guess is you need the original Dell driver to properly use the IGP. Then installing the latest CCC overwrites it to bring the drivers up to date, but still leaves the IGP enabled. I am assuming that if we just installed CCC without the dell drivers underneath, the IGP will not work.

This is all speculation on my part, since I have yet to even touch a M17, but it makes sense to me.

While this works, you will lose the ability to use your Fn F4/F5 buttons to adjust brightness....and some users like me, cant use an external monitor with anything but stock drivers.... i am using the M18x drivers, which are slightly newer and work perfect. to be honest there is little to no performance increase with reference drivers at this point.

the newer ati does provide a performance/stability increase in some of the newer games. i personally had never had any problems running an external monitor with any driver yet. but the brightness control don't work like steve said, but can still be adjustable through your power plan.

i recommend running the stock driver for now, untill you see issues in gaming/3d app or if your planning on benching.
